Book Description

5 and up
In his fifth adventure Hopper, the little arctic hare, is having such fun with his friend Scamp that he loses all track of time. He promised his mother he would be home before dark, and now he is late! "Don't worry", says Scamp, and shows Hopper a shortcut across the river. But Hopper can't swim! Thanks to a friendly beaver, Hopper's watery adventure ends happily. He learns that shortcuts can be dangerous and that his mother does know what's best for her little arctic hare.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-After staying too long at his friend Scamp's house, Hopper the bunny tries to take a shortcut home by swimming across a stream. When he gets into trouble in the water, Scamp tells him to hang onto a branch and goes for help. Hopper drifts downstream to a beaver's dam, where he makes a new friend and learns a lesson as well: water is dangerous when you don't know how to swim. Illustrated in lovely pastel watercolors somewhat in the style of Garth Williams's work, this is a simple story that gently preaches water safety while entertaining readers. Pfister has written other "Hopper" books, and no doubt the youngest audiences will welcome another. Slight, but pretty, and with a worthwhile message.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like the way this book makes me feel., December 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hang on Hopper! (Library Binding)
I like the way this book makes me feel. Hang on, Hopper! is a very pleasant introduction into Pfister's mycological studies. I find it also gives great insight into his philosophical beliefs. I mean, Hang on, Hopper! Brilliantly, Pfister expresses a lot of the frustrations that encounter today's youth. He provides helpful suggestions for all of us, so that we can keep control, "hang on" if you will, and in the end, triumph.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated Tale, January 25, 2012
This review is from: Hang On, Hopper! (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully illustrated (watercolor) children's book appropriate for reading to toddlers. The text is small and uses some fairly hard words for a 1st grader (e.g., 'sputtering')

The story is a sweetly worded little tale of a bunny and his friend. Hopper ends up being goaded into crossing a stream and, while doing so, grabs on to a piece of driftwood and floats down to a beaver's nest. Hopper and the beaver make friends as they explore the beaver's unique home.

In all, this is a keeper for the beautiful watercolor artwork alone. But the story is also very sweet and holds a child's attention well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book, September 19, 2007
This review is from: Hang On, Hopper! (Paperback)
My first grader and preschooler have enjoyed this library book. The story is fun and well-written (or in this case, well-translated from German). The pictures are in an attractive style. And the story even feels "fresh" in that it doesn't feel like the typical children's tale.
