Buzzcocks? Undertones? Nope, it's the Soup Dragons.,
By Matthew A. Goodin ""my too sense"" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hang Ten (Audio CD)
While some may be familiar with the Soup Dragons' later stuff (their cover of "Free" received quite a bit of airplay), their first album is an almost-undiscovered gem of blazing power pop, totally unlike anything else they recorded thereafter. Fans of the Buzzcocks and the Undertones will definitely not be disappointed. Trust me. In fact, the similarity to the Undertones is impossible to deny. So, while perhaps a little derivative (what isn't?), this is still great stuff. Most songs clock in at about 2 minutes, have fast tempos, and all feature great buzzsaw guitars. If you are familiar with their later stuff (more of a Manchester scene/Happy Mondays type vibe), you'd never guess they used to sound like this. Favorites include Hang Ten, Slow Things Down, and Whole Wild World.
