Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Tisdale may never completely step out of the shadow of the great bassist Stanley Clarke, but he is further emerging with his own voice on each album--and Clarke has never led the NCAA in scoring. The former pro hoopster can't help the Clarke-influenced phrasing he burns into "Ready to Hang," "The Time Is Here," and "Off Into It." Producer/keyboardist Jeff Lorber makes everybody on his team better, and he's in the lineup on three tracks. Synthesizer programmer James Lloyd from Pieces of a Dream also contributes with a duet on the title track, feeding Tisdale a funky slam dunk. Tisdale's cover of "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" could easily cross over to the urban pop market, but his version of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" is the only real air ball. --Mark Ruffin

5.0 out of 5 stars First Rate!!!!!, August 18, 2004

While I have all of Wayman's CDs, this is actually the first one I have reviewed. Each one of Wayman's projects have been nothing less than stellar which affords me the opportunity to welcome a formidable jazz talent that in many cases goes unnoticed. (Hey, he was the bomb when he played for the Sacramento Kings!!!)

Before Wayman, the premiere jazz bassist was none other than Stanley Clarke who reinvented the role of the bass player by allowing the instrument to play the melody as opposed to being relegated to accompanying chores. It is easy to see that while Wayman has certainly forged his own niche in the jazz world, Clarke had an indelible impression upon him.

In "Hang Time" his fifth outing, Wayman is in top form. Even more interesting is that in each of his projects, he has included a wonderful interpretation of a gospel tune, an indication of his musical roots. Here, his interpretation of "Glory Glory" (When I Laid My Burdens Down) is wonderful. Equally impressive are his newer cuts along with a fresh, kicking interpretation of "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now."

I eagerly anticipate any new project from Wayman because he is quite simply an excellent jazz musician whose past projects have simply been awesome and he continues his tradition of providing top-notch smooth jazz projects; moreover, he is an artist who continues to grow.

If you have not been introduced to Wayman, you will find a treasure of wonderful music in his past projects as well as this one. To say this is a worthy addition to your smooth jazz collection is a masterpiece of understatement.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Way Man...5 stars, why not?, July 31, 2004

I just got into jazz recently and am beginning to love it more and more. I was in the store and I stumbled by Wayman's newest album. I used to watch him play for the Suns, and I knew he played the bass, but I had no idea he was putting out albums! He used to play a smooth intro before every Suns' game on TV.
Now that I think about it, I somewhat remember that his first album, "Power Forward" came out while he was still with the Suns. Like I said, I had no idea that he's done all these albums the last few years. I didn't pick "Hang Time" up right then and there, but I decided soon after to pick this up a few days after. Like I said, I am just beginning to appreciate jazz music.
This album is a joy throughout. I am so glad I got it. Highlights are the song "Cruisin'" which I think is the same beat from a song in the movie DUETS, and the crowning achievement is the upbeat, "Ain't no stopping us now," which is just a miraculous song. "Hang Time" loses a little momentum in the last 3 or 4 songs, but overall it is a sastisfying listen. Track 7 reaffirmed my belief that a trumpet could shine and hold it's own to make a good jazz song. I am proud that such a talented and good human being represented my hometown Suns at one point. Wayman puts together some pretty top-notch contemporary jazz in this album. It's great to see a professional sports player do something significant after their career, when you only hear about and see the most popular players after their careers are over. Keep on rocking, Wayman.

5.0 out of 5 stars SLAMMIN !!!!!, July 15, 2004

This is Wayman's 6th effort. Wayman put out a fantastic gospel CD, 21 Days, in 2003. This is his first effort on Dave Koz's label RENDEZVOUS MUSIC http://www.rendezvousmusic.com . WOW!!

I like the original material the best. Although Wayman covers great tunes like Smokey Robinson's Cruisin and McFadden/Whitehead's Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now, the best stuff is in tunes like Ready To Hang, Creative Juices & the title track..HANG TIME.

Without sounding too cheesey, this CD will be hanging in my CD player for a long time. Perfect for the rest of the summer.
