Book Description

June 2007
Ancient enemies stalk ghostly fog forests as legends come to life. The Divide is flooded. Habryn Kail and the Homunculus are missing, presumed dead. Sal and his companions seek the source of the flood in the legendary Hanging Mountains, hoping to head off a crisis that was put in motion a thousand years ago. As conflict erupts between two long-forgotten civilisations, the outsiders find that allies are hard to come by. Taken captive and separated, they uncover uncomfortable truths about the world and how it relates to the one that came before - our world. Something dark and deadly is stirring in the heart of the mountains. And the closer it comes to waking, the more certain it seems the Homunculus may not have been the enemy at all.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The digressive third volume in Williams's Books of the Cataclysm series (after 2006's The Blood Debt), set on a far-future Earth, propels its heroes on a perilous quest, while something "dark and dangerous" grows in the mountains. Rather than push toward the source of the postapocalyptic flood that swept through the crack in the Earth called the Divide, Marmion, a dedicated Sky Warden, and his traveling companions are forced to detour into the forest to prevent a needless interspecies war between the human foresters of Milang and the beastlike beings known as the Panic. On a separate journey, the twins Hadrian and Seth (both contained in the body of a Homunculus), and tracker Habryn Kail engage in portentous expository discussion. This entry feels like an unnecessary, if enjoyable, diversion from the main story line. Hopefully, the projected fourth and final installment will pull everything together into a coherent whole. 4.0 out of 5 stars Sean Williams still delivers., June 8, 2007
This review is from: The Hanging Mountains: Books of the Cataclysm: Three (Hardcover)
The Books of the Cataclysm continues. He has tricked me though, looking
at the end of this, it would appear to be at least a quadrilogy.

Still very good again, as the band surrounding Sal and Shilly continues to grow, they literally encounter aliens in a Floating City, locked in a struggle with a forest people.

The mysterious Angel is uncovered, Seth and Hadrian's homunculus form starts to become more grounded.

Relations also continue to improve between change workers, and non,
and authority figures and otherwise. Definitely a group of characters
that you could have a drink with, talking stone heads notwithstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensable read, July 14, 2008
This review is from: The Hanging Mountains: Books of the Cataclysm: Three (Hardcover)
Book 3 of the 'Books of the Cataclysm' requires familiarity with the prior novels to prove fully satisfying, but any reader following the saga will find THE HANGING MOUNTAINS an indispensable read. Here the Divide is flooded, the Homunculus is missing, and Sal and company are searching for the legendary Hanging Mountains to avert a crisis. Dangerous truths come to light in this active story of a desperate journey. A top pick for collections that have author Sean Williams' other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great conitnuation, October 4, 2007
This review is from: The Hanging Mountains: Books of the Cataclysm: Three (Hardcover)
The Books of the Cataclysm continues. The Sky Wardens journey to the Hanging Mountains in search of the source of the flood and find two races perpetuating a generations-old war. While eluding his own old enemy, the Homunculus feels an ancient evil awakening in the mountains.

Moreso than The Blood Debt, The Hanging Mountains brings the story back to the beginnings. I found that I enjoyed this one much more than the previous book although not quite as much as The Crooked Letter. If you've been reading the series, this is not to be missed.
