5.0 out of 5 stars Will someone explain why this film is not available!??, January 19, 2005
This review is from: Hanging Tree [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This last time I saw this film, which was probably 15 or 20 years ago, it was excellent!
The scenery was breathtaking, and it was Gary Cooper in color!
I remember reading it was George C. Scott's first film, too.
Somebody has the rights to this film, and I guess they're holding out for big bucks. So what.
Does anyone think we'll pay $50 for a DVD? Or $80 for an obsolete VHS? C'mon, people!
The Hanging Tree is a good story, the film was done well and it affords great entertainment.
But, "whomever you are," if you wait long enough--no one will care. If you wait another 15 or 20 years, not enough of us will be around who care.
Can you imagine if there was a Rudolph Valentino film which had not been seen in 50 years? There would be a short line at the Box Office for that one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 1%, June 14, 2005
This review is from: Hanging Tree [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This classic is better than 99% of those westerns already on DVD. The acting and cinematograhpy are exceptional, and the story wonderful. We've been waiting for it on DVD ever since the DVD was invented. Amazon needs to place this title on their DVD search engine so that people can sign up for notification of its availability and perhaps that way help get the word out to the powers that be.

5.0 out of 5 stars It amazes me..., June 23, 2005
This review is from: Hanging Tree [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It amazes me that excellent films such as "The Hanging Tree" and Arthur Penn's "Four Friends" (to name but two) are NOT yet available on DVD -- esp. LONG before such crap as "My Mom's A Werewolf" (to name but one example), which is!!! Other commenters have already summarized the story well. "The Hanging Tree" is one of the very best and detail-memorable of the western genre -- esp. if one discounts the epic westerns. And it's certainly one of Cooper's very best "contemporary films (along with "High Noon" and "Friendly Persuasion"! Co-star Karl Malden is excellent as always; and this was the time I recall noticing George C. Scott on film, in a small but scenery chewing role. I've not seen this film in at least 10~15 years, sad to say, but I hope to again. MAKE A DVD OF THIS FILM!!! Perhaps if this was by MGM -- They've released a slew of classic westerns lately. -- and not Warner Bros.!? I don't know, but it's a GD shame!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hanging Tree, January 21, 2005

I agree with Mr. Galt of California - everything he said. Please brimg this movie out of the closet. It is too good to keep hidden and a diservice to Gary Cooper's memory. I was fortunate to see this movie more recently than Mr. Galt - 1995 to be exact but it is too good not to be able to see it when one wishes. Let's have this on DVD soon. Especially since I am 82 and can't wait forever!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hanging Tree, September 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hanging Tree [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of my very favorite Gary Cooper movies. It is a western and beautifully photographed. A very good story, with great supporting roles. I have asked for this movie for several years now. I would rather not buy a used movie. Why is this movies not available to buy on DVD. I'm sure western lovers as well as Gary Cooper fans would love to be able to buy this movie. It's not even shown on television. It's been years. Please, please put in a word for me to whoever has the power to re-release this excellent film!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hanging Tree, December 20, 2004
This review is from: Hanging Tree [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Of all the movies available I can not believe this one is not.
I saw this as a child in the small town of Whitefish,Montana.
This is where the author of the book is from and is also my fathers God Mother. It is one of the best movies ever made.
I have been looking for it for several years and I am also amazed that is is not on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Cooper's Finest, August 16, 2002
This review is from: Hanging Tree [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It is unbelievable that it is so difficult to find this movie on television or in video. So much is made of other westerns which, with the exceptions of the Big Country, Shane, and Red River, do not measure up to the scope, dialogue, screenplay, acting,or musical score of this classic. I believe that this is a film awaiting a rediscovery by those who appreciate a real story and great characterizations.

Hollywood doesn't make movies of this quality anymore. I have ordered a hard to find new copy in addition to a recopied version I purchased last year. The latter, while good, does not show the movie from its very beginning or end. If you do not see another western, be sure to see this one. The theme song should have won an academy award.

I have been searching for this movie for years. I only remembered that Gary Cooper was so great in it. Well, it certainly was a nice surprise to see all the other actors in this wonderful film! What a beautiful woman Maria Schell was. Just a great, great western. The scenery was beautiful. The hit song," The Hanging Tree " was good to hear. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!, August 14, 2004
This review is from: Hanging Tree [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Can't believe this GREAT movie, "The Hanging Tree" isn't available on DVD! I heard the song today and decided to get the DVD of it. Guess what!!!! Not available! One of the best westerns ever made. Can't understand why so many movies with no plot, no acting, no music score is readily available. What a pity and such a waste that this wonderful classic is kept in the can. I guess because he doesn't have filth in it, hollywood won't realease it. Whatever the reason, it is a shame!
