I liked the ranch up in the valley in the mountains, there is only a little path in to the valley and the whole valley belongs to him. It's the typical gunfighting type of book. This was my favorite Jack Ballas book. The descriptions are as if you are there.

This book is just not a real western, historically or practically.

The plot is clumsy and slow, the action is more like a badly done B western

movie than an action packed novel.

What first put me off was the fellow turning loose horses.

No one in their right mind turned horses loose.

They were one of the major sources of wealth in the old west.

So a lot of the action is slow and uncharacteristic of actual westerns.

The main romantic interest is just pot bolled on, over and over...

The improbability of the torture of the mine owner lasting more than a month and being done in a plot twist by his own son was pretty much what put it away for me.
