Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This new Foul Play supernatural/mystery series will doubtless render readers wide-eyed and goose-pimpled. In the first book, the ghost of Zack, a boy killed 200 years earlier ("he hadn't slept in two hundred years, either"), haunts the minds of the children next door. This enticing mystery combines action, suspense and chilling touches, culminating in an eerie conclusion. The second title, in which an escaped mental patient stalks three girls on a stormy night, is simply a horror story, not unlike the Friday the 13th movies. These spooky yarns have their horrific moments: for example, a child is murdered, a dog is hung and, in both tales, a harmless game becomes a deadly sport. Middle readers may well find these details disturbing; in fact, the stories seem much more appropriate for older readers--perhaps future titles will feature more mature protagonists to engage that audience. However, daring middle readers devoted to thrills and chills might enjoy these tales without trepidation. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-- Innocent childhood play leads to involvement in unsolved mysteries from the distant past for the young people in these two thrillers. In Hangman , a slumber party game of hangman connects the girls to a lynching and a great-grandson who thinks he has to seek revenge for what was done to an ancestor. An old house and a game result in a meeting with a ghost and a final reconciliation with a 200-year-old mystery in Tag . The stories are tightly written, with all the threads expertly woven together to produce enough suspense to keep readers eagerly anticipating each and every page. Vivid images will be conjured up as events unfold. The game connections are novel and keep interest high. --Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA

This book was extremely frightening! I read it four years ago when I was in fourth grade, and it scared me so much! I have been looking all over for this book, and if you are looking for something frightening, check it out!
