Remorseful Hangman,
By Kumar (Boston,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hangman's Journal (Hardcover)
The story set in the pre-independent Indian princely state of Travancore(present Indian state of Kerala- God's Own Country). The travails and tribulations of the hangman for whom hanging the condemned is a livelihood and feels remorseful after each episode are vividly portrayed in this griping novel.Warries takes us to the gallows, the rituals and the concomitant pains both the hangman and the condemned man undergo from a close distance eloborating the fine art of the profession.Janardhan Pillai, the hangman is the protagonist, works helplessly on the summons from the King and has a disapproving family and an array of callous friends. The novel also has luxurious accounts of Kerala-the mooring for the Arundathi Roy's characters. The novel makes a neat reading and is very lively.
