Overview:

Hank Frank is a 1950s style hard bob album. All the songs on the CD are performed well and there is nothing not to like on this album. However, there also is nothing really to get too excited about either. Nothing really novel is being done here. The arrangements of the standards are pretty straight forward. It is just a pair of legends beautifully playing some classics and some new songs. The mood of the album is fairly laid back and happy. The group is made up of Jones on pino, Wess on flute and sax, Micky Roker on drums, bassist John Webber, and guitarist Ilya Lushtak. The tracks with Wess on sax tend to be at a higher level than the tracks where he plays flute.

Song Highlights:

You Made a Good Move: This track opens up some just a piano bass drums trio,a and then picks up steam when Wess comes up with his energetic theme. Very nice, and catchy

Autumn Serenede: This song has a bossa nova, shuffle beat and is very subdued. There is some beautfilly interplay between guitarist Lushtak and Wess. Laid back and relaxing.

All or Nothing At All: Of the cover songs, this has the most unique arragement. Wess emphasizes the first node of the melody with a hard hitting blast. It works well and adds a small twist to the standard.

Two of the great players together. I have seen these two on several occasions in NYC and they asre great players. Together this CD is a winner. I did have a problem with the CD itself--it wouldn't play! I returned it to Amazon and they replaced it and it still wouldn't play. I took it to two different neighbors and it played on both their machines. One of them burned me a copy off the original and I brought it home and o\it played. What's up with that? This has never happened in all the years I have been buying and playing CD form various companies, really confusing.
