A Great Session (But Buy it On the Mosaic Set if You Can),
By x (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hank Mobley Sextet (Audio CD)
This recording is a great example of Mobley's solid work for Blue Note in the 1950s. This particular session, recorded on 25 November 1956, features Mobley with Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, Paul Chambers, and Charlie Persip. That lineup alone should be reason enough for buying this CD. The playing is crisp and fluid, with the two trumpeters playing in unison frequently before breaking off into their focused, emotionally charged solos. The interplay between Morgan and Byrd on "Double Whammy" and "Mobleymania" is wonderful, as is Mobley's tenor playing throughout the entire disc. This is some really solid hard bop. Before paying the high import price to get this CD, you might consider saving a few extra pennies and get "The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions" on Mosaic Records. It has all the tracks on this CD and even an alternate take of "Barrel of Funk." The 6 CD set, in total, contains what was originally nine albums, two of which were never released in the USA and four of which were never reissued domestically on CD. If you are a Hank Mobley fan who is contemplating the purchase of this CD, it might be more economical in the long run to get the Mosaic set. |
