After all it is western swing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hank Thompson - All-Time Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Thank God or whoever thought it was important to bring back the very best of the legends of country music on CD. This is one of the very best examples of what western swing really is. A must for every person who wants to see what country was. I only hope it comes back.

A fine collection,

If you take away the cigarettes and whiskey from the voice of Ernest Tubb, and add the smoothness of Charlie Walker, you end up with Hank Thompson. This greatest hits compilation is a "must have" for fans of true country & western music. Hank rarely strayed from the 2 1/2 minute song, and on this album are 12 of his best, including the infamous "Wild Side of Life" and "A Six Pack to Go". I'm not sure if you'll ever hear the politically incorrect "Squaws along the Yukon" on today's wussy Country Radio, but there was a time when country music was not force fed to the masses of the great unwashed. Thank God for Hank Thompson's contribution.

These songs are classics and still hold up just as well for this generation of listeners as they did for my parents and grandparents.

Texas swing music at it's best,

This is an excellent sampling of Hank Thompson's best. "Oklahoma Hills", "Squaws Along The Yukon", "Six Pack To Go", "Rub-a-dub-dub" are all first-rate country songs that could hold up well today if sung by the right person (George Strait, for example). H.T. has a unique style and a voice that is instantly recognizable by country music fans.

Super Duper Place To Start!,

This is a great place for listeners curious about Hank's sound to start. The songs are a great sampling of his various styles, and the recordings are beautiful across the board. The tasteful flourishes of strings and steel guitar reveal Hank to be a playful, inventive bandleader, composer, and songwriter.
I personally first heard him via the recordings from his home studio collected on the album "Hank World." While that's a great document, this album opened my ears to the true depths of his talent and willingness to experiment. In particular, I'm always thrilled to hear the little snare accents echoing the chorus in "Rub-A-Dub-Dub" and the mournful touches of steel guitar in "Waiting in the Lobby of Your Heart." The The Brazos Valley Boys are one of the greatest country bands of all time. Hank's entire recorded output deserves to be heard, and I think just about any one would feel the need to do so after listening to this collection. There's just a lively, adventurous spirit in Hank's music that is missing from much of today's pop-country. To my ears, the old stuff just sounds better- and few artists knew recording as well as Hank. I can't conceive of a human being not loving this album. Truly: "Not a turd to be heard." |
