Connie Stevens recorded this album in 1962. Initially, when she signed with Warner Bros Records, she was marketed to the teen audience largely due to her popularity on the TV show "Hawaiian Eye" in the role of "Cricket." Her subsequent recordings, however, were wisely diversified, leaning more toward adult oriented pop.

This album is an example. It was the custom in those days for pop singers to record country songs with a pop flavor. This particular LP finds Miss Stevens performing twelve Hank Williams songs with full orchestra and pop arrangements. No fiddles here. Purists, needless to say, are not likely to embrace the result.

I, on the other hand, find her renditions absolutely charming. Whether she's singing the tender "A Teardrop on a Rose" or the delightful "Settin' the Woods on Fire" she never fails to please.

The entire album exceeded my expectations. For that reason, I'm inclined to think that any fan of female pop vocals from the 50s and 60s would enjoy this album.

The definitive album in tribute to Hank Williams had been done by Joni James on M-G-M Records, selling more than a million copies. But Connie Stevens wanted to do a Hank Williams album and not just do an echo of what had been done before. Her take on Williams is very pop and not much country and it's really a delightful, fresh album, beautifully sung and arranged. Stevens has achieved a remarkably long and successful career with a very little voice. The key is she is a very good singer technically and a very good interpreter of lyrics. She personally supervised every aspect of every album she made for the adult market past her teen queen stage, and that special viewpoint is very evident on this album.
