This book is more a coffee table/inspiration type book than a "how to" book, but then again, it never purported to be anything but. Marsha Greenberg simply wanted to share her love of vintage handkerchiefs and dolls and has done it in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and thought provoking.
The imagery is lush and the accompanying text is delightful. If one is looking for a "how to" in creating doll clothing from vintage handkerchiefs, then this is NOT a book for them. While there are some patterns they are scant and the doll size served is not apparently mentioned. But as a book for inspiration, this book is certainly a winner!
For the intermediate to experienced seamstress, this book provides a wondrous jumping off entrance into the realm of doll haute couture. However, beginning designers and/or those looking for step by step instructions will be disappointed.
If you can just revel in Greenberg's pure design inspiration, then you will not be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a "how to" book, you will be disappointed.
Kudos to Marsha and may there be many more Hankie dresses and books!
I have been a fan of Marsha Greenberg for several years and was thrilled when I heard that she was publishing a book showcasing her beautiful 11 1/2" Barbie-sized dresses. I have many, MANY of her dresses and the dolls come to life when I put a new dress on them. I can't imagine ever having the patience to make one of these hankie dresses myself, but I am so appreciative of Marsha's creativity, enthusiasm and patience. Every little button, adornment, ribbon, etc., is hand done by Marsha.
I love this book because it is visually lovely and a peaceful page turner! I appreciate the fact that her accompanying "words of etiquette" echo a time when manners and feminine attire were the norm. Her Hankie Couture girls would NEVER cell-talk or text while visiting with a friend who is at the same luncheon table! I have purchased a couple of copies of her book and will give my little granddaughter one soon.Read more ›
