“From the humorous to the elegant, every one of the designs in Hankie Couture is simply amazing and a delight to look at!”

About the Author

Marsha Greenberg began sewing her own fashions at the age of eleven. Her love of fabrics, colors, and patterns continued throughout the years. In the summer of 2002, after discovering a treasure trove of vintage handkerchiefs in a Pennsylvania antiques shop, Marsha made her first Hankie Couture dress--and hasn't stopped since. Her unique creations can be found on eBay and on her website. Marsha and her husband live in Encino, California.

Somehow my review for this book was originally attributed to another book about vintage handkerchiefs...I hope this time I get it right...

This book is more a coffee table/inspiration type book than a "how to" book, but then again, it never purported to be anything but. Marsha Greenberg simply wanted to share her love of vintage handkerchiefs and dolls and has done it in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and thought provoking.

The imagery is lush and the accompanying text is delightful. If one is looking for a "how to" in creating doll clothing from vintage handkerchiefs, then this is NOT a book for them. While there are some patterns they are scant and the doll size served is not apparently mentioned. But as a book for inspiration, this book is certainly a winner!

For the intermediate to experienced seamstress, this book provides a wondrous jumping off entrance into the realm of doll haute couture. However, beginning designers and/or those looking for step by step instructions will be disappointed.

If you can just revel in Greenberg's pure design inspiration, then you will not be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a "how to" book, you will be disappointed.

Years ago I made little dresses from vintage hankies and linens for my daughter's dolls, but I've never seen anything as fabulous as the ones Marsha makes and displays in this book! Each little dress is a masterpiece. The creativity and ingenuity she displays in these doll's clothes is astounding. Since I have dozens of vintage hankies, I immediately tried out her patterns. I'm finding they run larger than the typical barbie dolls that my grown daughter played with, so I've altered and redrawn the patterns....and dusted off my old patterns to use with hankies too. That's OK though, because this book seems to be first and formost an inspiration book, not a pattern book, and it definitely delivers plenty of inspiration!

As soon as I read the first sentence of the introduction starts with Marsh's passion, "I love, love, love creating, deigning, and sewing," I knew that this book would be great! Turning the pages was like witnessing magic. Marsha transformed small pieces of vintage hankies into beautiful, sophisticated, elegant and gorgeous outfits and accessories for 11-1/2" fashion dolls. The photos are breathtaking. They clearly show the details of each outfit. Marsha is extremely talented in clothing design. She skillfully used the vintage hankies' prints and embroideries to create stunning couture clothing designs. She also includes basic patterns & construction instruction to help you start to create your own designs. I love, love, love this book! You'll, too!

This book would be a feast for anyone's eyes. The photograhy and layouts are excellent. Each design communicates more than fashion and technique. The hankies and designs look like they were created for each other. While there is not a pattern for each design, the patterns included are representative and the accompanying pictures and instructions make them easily executable for even budding seamstresses willing to spend the time and experiment. They have been designed for 11 1/2 dolls and dolls are available from the website listed in the book. There is a design by design listing in the back giving details of how each design worked with the pictured hankie. This is so valuable for those making designs from their available hankies. I saw book featured in a magazine and immediately ordered it from Amazon. I was not disappointed.

This book is so cute! It takes a real creative individual (like Marsha Greenberg) to, not only come up with the idea to make doll dresses out of handkerchiefs, but to also write a book about it. I happen to own one of Marsha Greenberg's Hankie dress, and I admire the craftsmanship and detail she puts into her work. The book is also so much fun to read and look through, I will recommend it to anyone.
Kudos to Marsha and may there be many more Hankie dresses and books!

The book itself is fine. It has a lot of inspiring ideas of how to change hankies into beautiful outfits for Barbie and her friends. I bought the digital version of the book. The problem is that the patterns don't print out to the correct size that they are supposed to be. I wrote the author at her website and told her that I had bought this book from Amazon. I asked if there was any way I could get the patterns in the correct size. She said that I should buy the printed book from Amazon. Since I bought and paid for her book - and I assume she gets paid something for it - I would think that she would want to correct any problems with the purchase. I don't understand why they published a digital version if the patterns won't print to scale. I was a little shocked by her suggestion that I should just buy the same book again in printed version. It is a pretty book to look at. I just wish the patterns were functional. I would welcome a remedy if anyone has one.

Thank you.

I enjoyed the author's comments about her love for vintage hankies and the photographs were wonderful. Her creations for Barbie-type fashion dolls are whimsical and delightful. I've made two little dresses using her patterns and plan to enlarge the patterns to make similar dresses for larger fashion dolls. The only thing I would change - if anything - would be to include the patterns as separate sheets attached to the book, or enclosed within the book. I traced her patterns onto craft paper rather than cutting the book itself and risk losing the photographs or text. I don't enjoy tracing patterns and having them as separate sheets would have simplified using the patterns. Overall, the book was well worth the money and I hope there will be a sequel - perhaps more photos and examples using other vintage fabrics and linens.
