Cute Everything, 4/7/11
“From the humorous to the elegant, every one of the designs in Hankie Couture is simply amazing and a delight to look at!”

About the Author

Marsha Greenberg began sewing her own fashions at the age of eleven. Her love of fabrics, colors, and patterns continued throughout the years. In the summer of 2002, after discovering a treasure trove of vintage handkerchiefs in a Pennsylvania antiques shop, Marsha made her first Hankie Couture dress--and hasn't stopped since. Her unique creations can be found on eBay and on her website. Marsha and her husband live in Encino, California.

The book not only is beautiful and fun to look through but it also creates inspiration within me to "dream" about by-gone fashions.

Somehow my review for this book was originally attributed to another book about vintage handkerchiefs...I hope this time I get it right...

This book is more a coffee table/inspiration type book than a "how to" book, but then again, it never purported to be anything but. Marsha Greenberg simply wanted to share her love of vintage handkerchiefs and dolls and has done it in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and thought provoking.

The imagery is lush and the accompanying text is delightful. If one is looking for a "how to" in creating doll clothing from vintage handkerchiefs, then this is NOT a book for them. While there are some patterns they are scant and the doll size served is not apparently mentioned. But as a book for inspiration, this book is certainly a winner!

For the intermediate to experienced seamstress, this book provides a wondrous jumping off entrance into the realm of doll haute couture. However, beginning designers and/or those looking for step by step instructions will be disappointed.

If you can just revel in Greenberg's pure design inspiration, then you will not be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a "how to" book, you will be disappointed.

Years ago I made little dresses from vintage hankies and linens for my daughter's dolls, but I've never seen anything as fabulous as the ones Marsha makes and displays in this book! Each little dress is a masterpiece. The creativity and ingenuity she displays in these doll's clothes is astounding. Since I have dozens of vintage hankies, I immediately tried out her patterns. I'm finding they run larger than the typical barbie dolls that my grown daughter played with, so I've altered and redrawn the patterns....and dusted off my old patterns to use with hankies too. That's OK though, because this book seems to be first and formost an inspiration book, not a pattern book, and it definitely delivers plenty of inspiration!

As soon as I read the first sentence of the introduction starts with Marsh's passion, "I love, love, love creating, deigning, and sewing," I knew that this book would be great! Turning the pages was like witnessing magic. Marsha transformed small pieces of vintage hankies into beautiful, sophisticated, elegant and gorgeous outfits and accessories for 11-1/2" fashion dolls. The photos are breathtaking. They clearly show the details of each outfit. Marsha is extremely talented in clothing design. She skillfully used the vintage hankies' prints and embroideries to create stunning couture clothing designs. She also includes basic patterns & construction instruction to help you start to create your own designs. I love, love, love this book! You'll, too!

After purchasing Marsha Greenberg's book, her Couture Doll, and one of her beautiful apron dresses, I knew I found a new sister in vintage textiles! Her book is colorful and creative, her writings are heart-felt and inspiring, and her instructions on how to make your own doll clothes from vintage hankies are excellent! I plan to feature her Hankie Couture fashions on my Pinterest site, and I encourage you to search on eBay for her lovely creations at "Hankie Couture," or visit her web site at [...] - Marsha is a gifted textile artist, and the quality of her work sets the standard. She has designed and created thousands of one-of-a-kind doll dresses from vintage hankies and showcases over 600 of them on her "Wall of Fame," as shown in her book.

Marsha's book divides the chapters into these categories:

Chapter 1 - The Hankie Dress (The original Vintage-Hankie Creation);
Chapter 2 - The Apron Dress: Hankies Twinned with complementary Fabrics;
Chapter 3 - The ACEs: Applique, Crochet, and Embroidery;
Chapter 4 - Sleek and Sophisticated: Elegant Ensembles with Cosmopolitan Flair;
Chapter 5 - Just for Fun! Dresses with a Sense of Humor;
Chapter 6 - Special Occasions: Weddings, Parties, and Celebrations;
Chapter 7 - Sleepwear: Playful and Lovely; and
Chapter 8 - How-To: Instructions for Making Your Very Own Hankie Doll Dress

You won't find this kind of quality in doll fashions made with such unique and beautiful designs anywhere else! Buy her book, her dolls, and her vintage-hankie dresses for your daughters, granddaughters, and other people you love.

I rarely give book ratings, but Marsha Greenberg's book, Hankie Couture, deserves the highest attention and priority.

Make a Great Day!
Dianne Marie

This book would be a feast for anyone's eyes. The photograhy and layouts are excellent. Each design communicates more than fashion and technique. The hankies and designs look like they were created for each other. While there is not a pattern for each design, the patterns included are representative and the accompanying pictures and instructions make them easily executable for even budding seamstresses willing to spend the time and experiment. They have been designed for 11 1/2 dolls and dolls are available from the website listed in the book. There is a design by design listing in the back giving details of how each design worked with the pictured hankie. This is so valuable for those making designs from their available hankies. I saw book featured in a magazine and immediately ordered it from Amazon. I was not disappointed.
