Product Description

The Hanna Instruments HI 98103B is a hand-held pH meter with manual two-point calibration, a replaceable electrode, and an LCD screen. The meter provides readings from 0.00 to 14.00 pH (+ or - 0.2), with a resolution of 0.01 pH. It is designed for beer and beverage making, but can be used for other applications; it is an alternative to litmus paper.

The HI 98103B operates from 0 to 50 degrees C (32 to 122 degrees F) with maximum relative humidity (RH) of 95%. The HI 1270 electrode is replaceable to prolong the life of the meter. Two 1.5V batteries are included, and provide approximately 3,000 hours of continuous use. The meter measures 66 x 50 x 25 mm/2.6 x 2.0 x 1.0 inches (H x W x D) and weighs 50 g (1.8 oz.). (H is the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is the horizontal distance from left to right; D is the horizontal distance from front to back.) Buffer solutions (4.01, 7.01, and 10.01 pH), storage solution (HI 70300M), and replacement electrode (HI 1270) are sold separately.

A pH meter, also called a sensor or tester, is a device used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. A pH meter has either a portable or a benchtop body. Many portable meters are handheld devices. Some testers have an internal sensor, and may have a tip and body that fit inside of a container for measurement. A meter is commonly used in many different environments from laboratories to field research and manufacturing facilities. Researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists use a pH meter in aquaculture, agricultural, wine-making, and water-testing, and for scientific applications. Some pH meters may measure additional parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity (also called electro-conductivity or EC), temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, resistivity, or oxygen reduction potential (ORP)/mV.

Hanna Instruments manufactures analytical instrumentation and supplies, including pH meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. The company, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 standards.

It is a good value and easy to use.

That being said, the reading jumps all over the board so I'm not sure exactly what the reading is in the end.

I am a scientist and have routinely used pH meters for ~10 years. I am not an expert with pH meters but I calibrate and use pH meters every few weeks in my lab. I can easily say that this probe that I received is fouled. The behavior is typical of a probe that has been left out to dry (I have done this before) meaning that you can never calibrate it and the readings drift quite a bit.

After opening this up for the first time, I followed the instructions to soak the probe in the pH 7.01 buffer for two hours. I cleaned it and then tried to calibrate first with the pH 7.01 buffer. The pH reading started really low, around 3, and I thought...uh oh...this is pretty low even for a non-calibrated probe. I am only able to reach a pH of ~5.5 maximum for the pH 7.01 buffer calibration.

I cleaned the probe and tried again. After several cleanings and soakings, the probe still doesn't seem to read correctly. The readings also float or drift all over the place. I put the probe in the pH 4.01 solution and it doesn't even change the reading. If I adjust the 4/10 screw I cannot even get it from 5.5 to 4.01.

I sent Hanna an email about it but this thing should really work out of the box. I want to try to get a replacement from them but this is a major disappointment.

The meter arrived just slightly off calibration but was easily corrected with the help of 4.01 and 7.01 solutions (which need to be purchased seperately). It doesn't adjust for temperature but I really don't need to be that exact. It is a good value and easy to use.

This PH tester works great! It seems to be very accurate and dependable. Don't forget to order the 4.01 and 7.01 Calibration Solution to calibrate it with, which you have to do before you can use it.

I've only owned mine for about a week, but that's long enough to see some of the good and the bad of this tester.
True it is better than the strips or liquid testers.
I like the fact I can replace the electrode if needed.
For the price, if it lasts a year it will be worth the investment.
The cons:
The reading does fluctuate, but I think that's due to the liquid levelling off to the ambient temperature because I notice it falls or climbs pretty steadily, then only jumps back and forth by a reading of .01.
I'm not too sure of the water resistance of the unit, so I'm careful about moisture on the body.
Having to manually adjust the calibaration y the two tiny screws on top can be a back-and-forth proccess.

In my opinion if this unit were waterproof, had automatic calibration and teperature compensation features it would be a much better unit.

I can a lot of food. It is important to know if the PH is low enough for to ensure longer shelf life. This ph meter works well...and was easy to adjust to the 4.0 and 7.01 samples. I am very pleased.

Well all I can say is that I certainly didn't get anywhere near my money's worth at all. I used it about 6 times over the course of the nine months I've had it and it can no longer be calibrated. Turning the screw does nothing anymore. Between the cost of the meter and the extra three big bottles of PH calibration fluids and the bottle of probe protection fluid, I'd say it cost me $10 each time for the PH information I gained from it while it worked. Very bad purchase.

The unit looks like a toy being made out of cheap looking plastic. It is not waterproof as are most pH meters.
You have to turn tiny screws to calibrate the unit, which is a pretty fussy procedure. I used mine once, the next week when I tried to calibrate it there was no effect when I turned one of the adjustment screws.

Also, the specs that Hanna publishes for this unit are deceptive. They brag about a 0.01 resolution but the accuracy is only 0.2. They could have a resolution of 0.0000001 but a high resolution is meaningless if the accuracy is low.

Save yourself a lot of headaches and buy a better unit. Cheap electronics are no bargain in the long term (or in my case the short term). A good quality meter should last for years instead of a week.

So far, my experience with this product has been positive. Yes, the reading fluctuates slightly, but it does on the several-thousand dollar laboratory pH meters that I have used also. That is just the nature of digital pH probes. Calibration was very easy with the two buffer solutions that they provide (pH 7.01 and 4.01). The package also included a cleaning solution in addition to the two buffers. Unfortunately, it did not include storage solution, but I made some of my own using potassium chloride and the pH 4.01 buffer (however, the instructions say that in a pinch you can store the probe in the pH 7.01 buffer). The probe holds calibration reasonably well. I just tested the calibration again, and it was a bit further off that I had hoped. It is easy to recalibrate, so it is still a good deal considering that it is a cheap unit. If you are just looking to do some occasional pH measuring, this is a great unit for you. If you want a full-time probe for quite frequent use, I would invest in one that might hold the calibration a bit better.
