Nice, seems accurate,
By Bomb Hills (Butte, MT United States) - See all my reviews

This is the first ph tester that I have ever used. Works good, seems accurate. I did have to calibrate it by one point when I took it out of the box. Be careful of the top where the on/off switch is at. I accidentally popped it off and the wire connecting to the battery pack broke, a little bit of soldering took care of that. The only way you can get the top back in place is to remove the screw and slide the inside out from the case. The instructions fail to mention that point.

Newcomers to pH testing should note that the use and maintenance of this instrument requires accessories that must be ordered separately.

A real pain to use,
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann (the Lehigh Valley, PA) - See all my reviews (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (2008 HOLIDAY TEAM) (REAL NAME)

I bought this Hanna pH tester because I wanted to easily test my soil pH without having to mix it into a set of little vials, add solutions, and then analyze the color. Well, I should have done more research, because this pH tester requires so many solutions -- storage solution, buffer solution, and solutions that are high or low pH-specific -- that it becomes a major production. If the solutions came with the unit, it wouldn't have been so bad, but tracking down all the necessary supplies ended up being more expensive than the tester itself.
Although the device does indeed work, it's not a purchase I'd recommend for the casual user. For the scientist or individual who does a lot of pH testing (say, in a pool), this is probably a five-star product, but for those who just want to take a reading now and then, it gets one star from me, not because it doesn't work (it does) but because the effort simply isn't worth it. For instant, no-fuss soil pH reading, try Luster Leaf 1818 Rapitest Mini 4-in-1 Soil Tester. -- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

Good pH Tester,

After doing a good bit of research I decided to purchase this pH tester based on the low price. The calibration solutions and storage solutions that are nessicary for proper maintainance of this tester are inexpensive. When you do a lot of pH testing with solutions that are a constant temperature, ie: room temperature solutions instead of boiling or almost frozen solutions, it is very accurate and saves time when compared to using pH drops and money over the long term when compared to using strips. It is very accurate once calibrated. I have recommended this model to others. Amazon shipped this product to me and it arrived 4 days earlier than they had estimated.

I received this item around a week ago.
It works well and looks cool. You need also, buffer solution (7.0, 4.0) storage solution (you can also use 7.0 solution, but storage solution is adviced) instruccions are good. Proper care , as with any tool, is required (Routine calibration adviced). Not water proof, reading takes a few seconds to settle. Accurate readings, good material and design. I am satisfied so far, kudos to hanna products.

Great meter, quick shipping.,

This is definatley a great meter for the beginer, or sporatic ph tester. only had to do a minor calibration on the meter. PH 7 solution read at 8.2, i adjusted it down to 7 and rinsed it off, then the ph 4 solution was spot on at 4.0. overall i am pleased with the purchase.
However, to amazon, I am less than pleased that my meter arived in a bubble sleeve, not a box. i woud have rather paid an extra 2 dollars for it to be boxed. envlope looks like it was run over by the forklift, i can see the treads. thankfuly the meter worked perfectly fine and its box was not too bad ( the product box, not the shipping sleeve ). I am hoping this is a one time problem.

Nothing fancy, just a simple ph meter. Used two screws and 2 calibration solution to set it up. The solutions cost as much as the meter though!

The meter works great for a $40 pH tester. I see all the people on here complaining that you have to buy separate calibration solutions. These people know very little about pH testers, they all need to be calibrated from time to time. I have found that once a month is sufficient. Hanna has foil packets of calibration solution that my hydro store sells for $2 a piece. Hardly more than the unit itself. If you want to be completely accurate, you are supposed to use new calibration solution every time. Think about it, you put it in water (or whatever you are testing), shake off excess, then in the 7.0 to calibrate, then shake off again and then put in the 4.0 solution. Well, every time you do this a little of the previous solution gets in new solutions. Over time this will change the reference solution. Seems to me most of the reviewers should just be using strips as this or any other digital unit is too complicated for them. The only reason I did not give 5 starts, is my first unit had to be replaced as it would not calibrate low enough on 7.0(would only go to 7.3) after a few months. The replacement unit (covered under warranty)has been flawless, so the first was probably broken from the factory.

I have been using this product for the last couple months. at first it seemed fine and actually even now it seems fine because when u put it in calibration solution it is always close. but, when you mesure water it is completely off. i found this out the hard way, i couldn't figure out what the problem was till I test the water with a liquid PH test. This is was reading all kind of different stuff, such a peice of crap. Don't waste your money, I wish I would have just gotten one of the more expensive ones to start out with. I have had 2 cheap ones now and they both failed.
