Product Description

The HI 991401 pH/Temperature meter is a waterproof device designed specifically for measuring pH and temperature in hydroponics, and agricultural applications.

Featuring a large easy-to-read LCD screen, automatic temperature compensation, and automatic calibration (at one or two points with two sets of memorized buffers), the tester provides fast and accurate pH and temperature readings. The HI 991401 also features a non-clogging pH electrode which was designed specifically to work in fertilizer solutions with high concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. A hold function allows the user to freeze the display to record results.

The HI 991401 tester measures temperatures of 0.0 to 60.0 degrees C (32 to 140 degrees F) + or - 0.5 degrees C (+ or - 1 degrees F)/RH max 95% (+ or - 0.1 degrees C /0.1 degrees F), and has a range of 0.0 to 14.0 pH (+ or - 0.1) with a resolution of 0.1 pH. Power is supplied through a 12-Vdc power adapter and the device has an input impedance of 1E12 Ohm. At 160 x 105 x 31 mm (6.3 x 4.1 x 1.2") and 190 g (6.7 oz.), the 991401 provides a conveniently sized meter for taking measurements in the field.

pH testers measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance and are commonly used by researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists.

First off, I have been using this meter for approx. 9 months now to monitor the ph and temperature of a saltwater reef aquarium. This meter is very accurate if it is properly calibrated, and seems to go a long time without need for recalibrating.
The reef tank is probably just as harsh, if not harsher of an environment, as someone using this for hydroponic growing. That being said, there was on review that I read, where they stated they liked the meter, but thought the ph probe was junk and did not last very long. I could be wrong, but perhaps their problem was that they did not realize that where the wire enters the probe, both ph and the temp probe, is not waterproof. The probes were designed to screw into a pipe or something, so under those conditions they would not be exposed to any water or fertilizer. My probes have to sit in the filter/sump of my tank so they occasionally do get exposed to salt water where they should not. Because of my particular arrangement of the probes, I had to use some silicone caulk to make a seal where the wire enters the probes. I would also like to add that when I first got this meter, I had some questions about it's operation, and called Hanna tech support.
I got someone's voicemail and left a message, and they called me back within minutes. He gave me very useful information and was willing to send me a new probe if I felt there was a problem. That never needed to happen since the problem was on my end. The unit is easy to read with the backlit display, shows ph and temperature at the same time, and comes at a good price. The only downfall of this meter is that the ph probe uses a non standard connector, instead of the BNC connector found on most ph probes, so at the cost of a replacement probe, you might as well buy a whole new meter.

This product is everything it said it was going to be, at first I was worried because I read the only review and it said it didn't work. I received mine today and took it out read all the instructions and it worked great. It's very accurate you only have to calibrate it once and it remembers the setting. It has a temperature probe and the PH probe and also included was the PH 7.01 and 4.01 calibration solutions, a 12v power cord, and easy to follow instructions. I paid 80 dollars for this and was worth every penny because I have bought two cheaper meters before and they were so inaccurate I messed the PH on all my plants up bad. Don't waste your time buying the cheapies buy this and you'll only have to buy it once. Also it is much cheaper than some other meters out there and it has the functionality of a very expensive meter. It's easy to read and use Overall a great buy. To the other person who said they had gotten two of these and they were both broken I'd say read the instructions before you start trying to use it. I would recommend anyone to buy this expert or novice

I now have four of these units. The unit itself is great- consistent and accurate. The probe, I'm sorry to say is junk. EVERY SINGLE PROBE has failed after one season - even after taking great care to maintain and store them properly. I have four units because to buy a new probe separately COSTS MORE THAN BUYING A NEW UNIT WITH THE PROBE INCLUDED! Check it right here on amazon! (search on Hanna 1293D) I figured why not just buy a complete new unit? I'm giving all the units away and am going with a different brand. I can understand one unit or probe failing, but not all four. That's an obvious quality control issue. 'Nuff said.

I have to say I'm guilty of knowing better and making a mistake anyway. I'll not be the first to say that the pH probe in this thing doesn't use a standard BNC connector, so you're stuck buying the $70 probe from Hanna, which costs around as much as a similar unit from Milwaukee with a BNC probe that can be replaced (every year and a half tops expected life) for as little as $20. I could likely hack an adaptor to use a standard probe, but ended up replacing the device altogether.

I left mine with the pH and temperature probes 24/7 in a hydro reservoir and the calibration remained stable enough over months. The temperature sensor is a plus and provides automatic compensation to the meter. The power cable is quite long so you're likely to reach an outlet, and the probe cables are also plenty long.

Overall, a great piece, but the probe thing adds so much to maintenance on the long run that it loses two whole stars. It says a lot that, although it fully met my needs, I replaced it by a similar model at the first probe replacement.

I've been using this meter for a month with no problems. The calibration was correct when I received the unit. Several things I have noticed for the most accurate readings are to keep the 2 probes from touching each other while testing. Give the probes about a minute or two especialy if switching from one reservoir to another to adjust to the temperature of your water. And try keeping the PH probe from touching the side of the reservoir while reading. This unit has proven to me that it gives accurate results. For half the cost of similiar units I think it's a bargain. 4.5 stars
