The ad doesn't tell you that it comes with a (1" x 3/8") Teflon-coated stirring bar. I was going to order some from Amazon but the shipping was several times the cost of the stirring bar, so I ordered from Cole-Parmer for less. Then I found I didn't really need to order any, but I am glad I got slightly larger ones anyway. Also, this is a small stirrer--look at the beaker that is on it (500-mL?). In fact, the box says "Mini stirrer," though the ad does not mention this. But it is working very well for my purpose, which is dissolving shellac in alcohol for classical guitar finishing by French polishing. Beware that the tracking information provided by Amazon (and I am NOT talking about the estimated delivery date) is meaningless: They may say it has been delivered even if it has not and their customer-service people will just keep telling you that the estimated delivery time is only approximate.

I bought this stirrer for stirring biologically active mediums such as yeast for homebrewing and liquid cultures for growing gourmet mushrooms. While I think it was a good value for the money it does produce some sound while operating and heats up slightly after being in use for a few hours. This heat production can cause problems if it heats up the medium too much, but I don't think I have overheated any yet.

The description of this item does not mention that it includes a stirring bar with it.
Had I read some of the previous reviews I would have seen that.

I have had this running for about 3 weeks now (almost every day for 30-90 minutes at a time) without any problems.
Having the magnetic stirring bar included with it was an extra bonus.

works well and feels sturdy. the stir bar that comes with it is thrown at top speed, although top speed isn't necessary, and a thicker beer mash may prevent that from happening. All in all, a really good buy for the price compared to other stirrers.

I use this magnetic stir plate for yeast starters for all of my homebrewing; especially the higher gravity brews. It works quietly and is perfect for the job.

Very nice stir plate. I bought this for stepping up starters in my homebrewing process. With the price and free Prime shipping it is a great deal. It does come with a stir bar.

I am trained in, but not practicing chemistry. I recently started compounding some cosmetic solutions for my wife (saves tons of money, insures freshness) and many contain hard to dissolve ingredients. This relatively inexpensive stirrer functions perfectly to accomplish that task with a small beaker or flask. The variable speed allows for a smooth run-up to the final mixing speed and does a fine job maintaining that speed. Exactly what I needed.

The Hanna Instruments HI 190M-1 Magnetic Mini-Stirrer with Speedsafe, 110/115 Vac Power Supply units are a great bargain compared to stirrers from scientific supply companies - maybe 5-10x cheaper. They work well for light duty lab stirring. However, they have a finite lifetime. I use them continuously to stir cultures, and usually after no more than a year or so they start varying in speed and intermittently stopping, and eventually stop altogether. I've had 3 die on me so far, and I assume all will go that way eventually. However, I can buy at least 5 spares for the price of one more reliable heavy duty stirrer which also is bulkier, so it's a reasonable tradeoff.
