Product Description

The Hanna Instruments HI 98129 is a multi-parameter tester that measures pH, electro-conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), and temperature, and features automatic temperature compensation (ATC), an LCD screen, automatic shut-off, and a waterproof body that floats in water. The tester automatically compensates for the effects of temperature when taking pH and EC/TDS readings, so additional measurements and manual temperature entries are unnecessary.

The HI 98129 meter has a replaceable pH electrode with an extendable cloth junction, and an EC/TDS graphite electrode that is resistant to salts and other corrosives. These features extend the life of the meter by allowing for replacement of the electrodes. Calibration is automatic at one or two points, with two sets of memorized buffer values (pH 4.01/7.01/10.01 or 4.01/6.86/9.18). The EC/TDS conversion factor and temperature compensation coefficient (&Beta) is user-selectable.

The tester functions in temperatures of 0.0 to 60.0 degrees C/32.0 to 140.0 degrees F (+ or - 0.5 degrees C/1 degree F), and has a range of pH 0.0 to 14.0 (+ or - 0.05 pH). EC range is 0 to 3999 uS/cm, TDS range is 0 to 2000 ppm (+ or - 2% F.S), with respective resolutions 1 uS/cm and 1 ppm. At 3.5 ounces and 8.3 x 2.7 x 1.3 inches (H x W x D), the HI 98129 is sized for taking measurements in the field. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.)

pH testers measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance and are commonly used by researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists.

Hanna Instruments manufactures analytical instrumentation and supplies, including pH meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. The company, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 standards.

I have used this meter for about 4 years for hydroponic gardening (hobby level). I have recently been using the meter to test the water and adjust pH and fertilizer in my kitchen Aerogarden. It's easy to use and accurate for this use, and has made a big difference in the quality and quantity of my gardening results.

I got the tds meter in package and it works great. Turns on real quick measures good. Takes a lil bit as far as the tds counting and ph counting. but it is very accurate within .01 accuracy...Very good quality. I was pricing a tds meter and a ph meter waterproof and temp meters. And its to much hassle to fanagle with different meters....At the end of it all, i only save 10 20 bucks...Meaning..THIS thing has it all in 1 shot, Worth the extra few bucks. Waterproof, tds, ph and temperature all in 1...Can't beat it... Good quality, u can just let it float in the water. The manual says to clean the tip of it after using to make the meter last longer. So thats what i do

I have the exact same problem as one of the other reviewers so I'm just going to repost:

"[...] did not hold calibration between on / off cycle. After being calibrated using 4.01 and 7.01 buffer solutions and turned off and back on, PH readings were off by .40 to .50. In other words the previously calibrated 7.01 buffer solution would read 7.40 to 7.50. This is way more than the advertised accuracy of + or - .05."

I also made a test where I inserted the meter in the 4.01 pH buffer and I did NOT remove the meter from the solution when the small clock disappeared (which signals that the reading is stable). The reading went slowly from 3.97 to 4.39, without me changing anything.

The electrode takes a very very long time to stabilize its reading.

I purchased my first Hanna combo meter 10 yrs ago and it was awesome. Then a couple years ago when it finally broke I replaced it. The second meter needed a new electrode after just a couple months. Then it failed entirely. My third meter lasted around 7 months and then it had the same problem with the ph electrode (the ppm seems fine, it has always been the ph electrode that fails on mine). I spoke with the manager at my local hydro shop and they said I am not the only one experiencing these problems. Hanna use to allow the hydro shops to swap out the meters if it was within the warranty period. They no longer do this. Now you have to contact Hanna directly and pay to ship it back and forth, only to be told the electrode will be replaced at your expense. The quality of the meter and customer service has declined. Not sure if it is true, but I was told the electrodes use to be made from hand blown glass and ever since they switched their manufacturing process they have turned to junk. I personally switched to a bluelab ph pen. I haven't had it long but so far it works (except it only goes to the tenth instead of hundredth decimal point).

After receiving this item I tested it out for about an hour and quickly made the decision to return it(mainly due to the fact that it was defective, would not give me a ppm reading.). As other reviewers have stated, it takes awhile to stabilize its readings and does not seem hold calibration well. When I went back to test the same water sample I got a one point differential in the previous reading. First ph reading was 8.1 which I knew was not accurate. Just before attempting to calibrate I tested the same sample again and got a ph reading of 7.4. After calibration I got a reading of 7.1. Three different readings from the same sample. I've seen similar products from bluelab sell for over $200 and have stellar customer reviews. In the end I guess you get what you pay for.

Also I would check out a four star review posted by orion as he explained perfectly why It may not be the best option for you if you plan to use it as an ec meter.

This is the second example I bought, and it's not working well. The pH sensor is functioning OK, but the conductivity one in about 30-40% of cases displays false low readings.

Ah, also - this type eats the batteries like there is no tomorrow. My old Oaktons used to run of the same set of batteries for 6-8 months, while this unit drops 1-2% of battery power every day ... which means the expensive batteries will have to be replaced every 2 months.

Among the advantages (arguably): easier to calibrate than most other pocket conductivity meters. But, these HAVE to use certain calibration solutions, specifically 1,413 uS. So, if you don't happen to have 1,413 uS only, don't even try with your 3,900 uS or whatever else you may have.

The only thing you can count on with overpriced Hanna instruments is that they're inconsistent in quality. I've had two of these, and both failed within a few months. At a bare minimum they need constant calibration, which if you're dealing with delicate fish isn't acceptable. And if you get a defective one, the best you're going to get from the company are directions about how to calibrate them. They will not replace a defective unit.

The first one did not hold calibration between on / off cycle. After being calibrated using 4.01 and 7.01 buffer solutions and turned off and back on, PH readings were off by .40 to .50. In other words the previously calibrated 7.01 buffer solution would read 7.40 to 7.50. This is way more than the advertised accuracy of + or - .05. Sent it back and requested a replacement. The second one was just as bad as the first. I would not recommend this item.
