Book Description

April 1, 1996 4 and up
Spending every day with Jack, her cat companion and best friend, young Hannah is unable to enjoy a visit to her grandmother's when Jack must remain behind, until Grandma devises a way that the inseparable pair can still share the trip.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?Hannah has a special relationship with her cat. Jack is more than just a pet and companion; he's a friend she cannot do without. They share a variety of activities from hunting fairies and garden snakes to bedtime stories. The child is excited when she learns that her family is going to visit her grandmother, until she is told that Jack cannot go. She and her grandmother have many adventures together, and always remember to send postcards to Jack. Hannah is even surprised by a reply. The vivid watercolor and gouache illustrations are appealing and match the story line quite nicely. A "warm, fuzzy" picture book to spark discussions on friendship, pets, and separation.?Kathy Mitchell, Gadsden Co. Public Library, Quincy, FL

From Booklist

Ages 3^-6. Accustomed to playing with her cat, Jack, Hannah misses him constantly when the family takes a car trip to visit Grandma. Everything the child sees reminds her of Jack, so Grandma suggests sending him postcards. Hannah is then able to enjoy her new experiences while still feeling connected to her beloved pet. The artwork, warm, simple-lined, watercolor-and-gouache paintings, reflects the emotional tenor of the story. The text sympathetically portrays love and homesickness in terms that children will understand. Pictures of the colorful postcards addressed to Jack add to the pleasure of this satisfying picture book. Carolyn Phelan

Great great book and excellent service in buying this book. My daughter loves this book. Her absolute favorite. We have been checking it out at our local library for about 2 years now and finally decided we needed a copy of our very own. Very cute story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why is Jack a Calico Cat?, November 28, 2009
This review is from: Hannah and Jack (Hardcover)
While reading the review for this book I noticed that the cover illustration shows "Jack" as a calico cat. Perhaps the editor, illustrator, and author are not aware that calico cats are almost always females? (Only in very rare cases are they male.) This sounds like a wonderful little fiction book, but I am sorry to see that more research was not done by all involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for children with real answers., July 5, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Hannah and Jack (Hardcover)
I loved Hannah & Jack! I wish my sister would
have written it while my two sons were small
enough for me to read it to them. Oh well,
my 23 year old and my 18 year old STILL read it anyway, and loved it. We think Mary is simply....The Best!!!
