Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4 The subtitle of the book tells all. Both words and pictures are purely descriptive of seasonal activities on an early New England farm. Hannah and her brother Tobias help cut wood, make syrup, carry water, plow and plant, cut hay, pick vegetables, and gather nuts. The neatly bordered illustrationsskillfully executed wood engravings inked in a somber gray-brownpicture the arduous year-long labors of grandparents, parents, and children. There are few smiles. Everyone works, and even the scenes of food and plenty (July 4th picnic and Christmas feast) find family members with scowling faces and belligerent attitudes. Life on an early American farm may indeed have been this dark and depressing, but surely there was color and comfort too. Donald Hall's Ox Cart Man (Viking, 1979) with its sparkling, colorful scenes by Barbara Cooney, is truer to life, one would hope, and to history. Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, N.J.
