Critical Resource for Understanding Arp's Oeuvres,

This review is from: Hans Arp 1886-1966 (Hardcover)
Jean/Hans Arp was that most unusual artist: One who was equally comfortable in alternative identities -- French/German as someone who was raised in Strasbourg; Painter/Sculptor/Poet; Collaborator/Solo Artist; and Husband/Promoter/Colleague.
Of all the works I've consulted and the shows I've visited, only this show and its catalog pay appropriate attention to all of these dimensions. Because of his many dimensions, Arp is probably the most interesting 20th century artist to study. But you won't realize that without this catalog that displays his personal life, philosophies, poems, studies, drafts and completed works. Those who are interested in Sophie Taeuber's work will be very pleased with the treatment of their life together and their many collaborations. If you read German, there's also a German edition that may be easier to find. I located my copy at a local library . . . but it was well worth the search. Enjoy! |
