5.0 out of 5 stars Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates
This book was written for many of us to read. It not only set the scene with great discriptions Mary Mapes Dodge had a true heart for her characters. They came directly from her heart and you could tell that by just the first few discriptions of her characters. The novel tells great experiences of Hans Brinker and others that help him complete his two goals. He was...

...if you have any affection for the original book or any respect for your child's intelligence. It is an offensively dumbed-down version of the classic. The soul and substance of this book have been surgically removed, the language simplified to second grade level, and the real-life messages and values so memorably presented by the original simply DELETED. The illustrations are of stiffly drawn, misproportioned coloring book figures. It is well worth waiting a couple years until your child is ready to read and enjoy and learn from the original version.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a SIMPLIFIED VERSION and not the original., January 25, 2002

Be aware that this is a SIMPLIFIED VERSION and not the original text. The original (which ...(this website) also sells) is much richer & more interesting; Ms. Dodge wrote it for the grade-school kids of the 1860s; my sibs & I enjoyed it as grade school kids in the 1950s; in my opinion, it is accessable to the grade-school kids of today. I'd give the original 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hans Brinker the illustrated classic, March 23, 2000

In the novel "Hans Brinker" by Mary Mapes Dodge many things occured. The Brinker family was a poor family. The family contained a mother,a father,a son,and a daughter. The mothers name was Meitje, the fathers name was Raff who has been in a trance since his accident 10 years ago,the sons name was Hans, and the daughters name was Gretel. In this novel Mrs.Brinker has to make some very tough decisions. One of those decisions were if she wanted to let the doctors do surgery on Raff. This surgery would mean risking his life because he could die from the surgery. Well she let them do sugery on him and he made it through the surgery and he thought that he was back to the same day of his accident. Hans also had to make many decisions. Hans wanted new skates to enter in a race. He got in the race but helped a friend by letting him use his sting to hold the skate together. This meant that Hans had to drop out of the races. He cared about other before himself. If everyone was like Hans the world would be great. This book is filled with friendship and love. I would recemend this book to anyone who likes mystery and adventure.

I have not read Hans Brinker, however I do have a copy of this book and I don't know when it was printed do to the fact that there is no copy right date or publishing date on the book. I do know that the auther is Mary Mapes Dodge. The publishers were J.H Sears & Company. Inc of New York. It was Printed and Bound at the Kingsport Press Kingsport Tennesse USA. I don't know how old it is. It is bounded and is red, on the front there is a shield that has the name and the auther name. I need your help in finding out how old the book is. I need more background information about the book. It has to be older than the 1940 publication. If there is any one that can help please contact me at cycat1@hotmail.com

5.0 out of 5 stars ADVICE NEEDED!, March 31, 2001
By A Customer
I discovered a copy of Hans Brinker while cleaning up after my grandfather's death. He was an avid reader! My problem is, that I, too, have no idea when, where, or what value this book may be? My copy is rather aqua with a little dutch boy on the front carry two buckets over his shoulders. In the background is a dutch girl (ice skating) and a windmill. Inside the paperback cover is printed, "Giant Junior Classics: HANS BRINKER" Mary Mapes Dodge, Books Inc. New York Many thanks for your help! pmuri@yahoo.com
