5.0 out of 5 stars Hotter greatness at its peak, February 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hans Hotter - Opernmonologe (Orfeo) (Audio CD)
Run, don't walk! This great singer hits unimaginable heights and depths in this recording from his later years. Emotion pours through his beautiful voice and excellent musicianship. Undercurrents of melancholy, powerful forte passages, blood-curdling insanity, compassionate reconciliation to life's mixed gifts: humanity and spirit beyond any I have heard elsewhere (including his own earlier recordings, London's, and everyone else).

5.0 out of 5 stars Tonal splendor plumbs the spiriutal depths!, February 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Hans Hotter - Opernmonologe (Orfeo) (Audio CD)
Hans Hotter was the greatest Wotan of his time, along with his Hans Sachs and Gurnemanz. The Philips recording of the latter is as definitive as the human person can achieve. Here in these excerpts we have the same interpretative skills which treat every phrase with the dignity and care they deserve. The German excerpts are what we have grown to appreciate and cherish. It is his "Ella giammai m'amo" that is so profound that the king's anguish and despair go beyond the limits of any theater stage. The Godunov excerpts are outstanding. Too bad he was limited to the German repertoire at the Met, which is to say Wagner. Bing could be a dictator on many occasions. This Cd is a must have if you appreciate Hotter's artistry.
