Book Description

September 30, 1994
Enormously successful during his own lifetime, the 15th-century Flemish painter Hans Memling left a vast legacy of work, including landscapes, portraits, altarpieces and miniatures. Brilliantly colourful, and characterised by an air of fantasy and illusion far removed from the political turbulence and bloodshed of 15th-century Flanders, Memling's paintings have always been extremely popular with the general public. Today Memling enjoys the stature he deserves as one of the true masters of late medieval art, and this volume provides a thorough reassessment of the artist and his work to herald the 500th anniversary of his death. Encompassing the entire range of his work, it contains a complete catalogue of the art, with each work reproduced in colour, and accompanied by detailed notes and analysis. A comprehensive biographical essay incorporating the latest research covers each period of Memling's life, setting him in the context of his own time and providing information on his most important contemporaries and predecessors. In conclusion the author provides an analytical review of his achievement, approached from historical, iconographic, stylistic, technical and aesthetic perspectives. Dirk De Vos is an art historian specialising in 15th and early 16th-century Flemish painting who has contributed to numerous periodicals and exhibition catalogues.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Underappreciated Flemish Primive, March 9, 2008
$399 for a book. But what a book! Check the price of the companion Rogier Complete Works. Over $2000. If you had to choose one of the two, even as an amateur I would get this one while it is still available. If one loves the work of these men one must have this book, the best of any on this subject I have seen. Perhaps a sapphire to the diamond and ruby of Johannes and Rogier, Memling deserves more recognition. Perhaps this work will better help demonstrate his refinement and elegance. Consider the Martin van Nieuwhoven diptych, just one of his unparalleled masterpieces.
Almost 8 pounds, on a luscious paper, this book is magnificently illustrated and printed, and beautifully written/translated. deVos is again amazing, as scholar and writer. He begins by traveling to Selingenstadt, compares the scenery and architecture of M's presumed birthplace to the backgrounds painted, and despite the paucity of data about M, gives a good impression of M's life, his special relationship to St John's Hospital, Brugge,as well as deVos's usual high level of commentary about the individual works. Strongly recommended.

This IS a wonderful book with marvellous prints of the work of Hans Memling. There are a lot of detail prints that open a sight to history of daily life / costume etc.
