First I should say I am a little biased, as Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite Authors; that said, I really enjoyed this book, the story is darker and scarier than the fairy tale of my childhood... which I like. To paraphrase the Author (not from this book) I like my Good characters to be good and my Creepy characters to by creepy... and this book delivers the creepy fantastically.

The artwork by Lorenzo Mattotti is phenomenal; It is just beautiful, his use of India Ink as a medium is astounding, and his grasp of negative space makes each illustration come to life; They would be just at home on a Gallery wall, or framed in my living room as they are in this book. I am blown away.

Some may dismiss it as "just a children's book" or "too dark" or "not worth the paper it is printed on" but, don't not believe them. Get it and read it, I am confident you will love it. It is safe to say that I will be using this as style reference in my professional work for years. I honestly cannot say enough good things about it. when two people collaborate at this level, there is magic.

Hansel and Gretel is a joint collaboration of Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti. I decided to review this book, because my wife loves Neil Gaiman, so I thought I'd finally give him a shot. The illustrations in this book are shades of black and white. These monochromatic illustrations present a very shadowy and haunting story. That makes them perfect for accompanying this chilling tale that many of us only think we know. This, however, is a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, so it's supposed to be dark.

The story stays true to the original version, with the exception of the mother. In the original, I believe it was the father's second wife, not first wife. This makes the story a little darker, because it is the wife (mother) who convinces the father to leave the children in the woods to starve. The rest of the story is pretty well known. They go to a witch's house. She tries to cook them. They stuff her into and oven and escape. They then find their way home to their father. The mother died from unknown causes, so it's mostly a happy ending. At the end of the book is a brief history lesson on the story of Hansel and Gretel, which would be good for older readers in a school or homeschool setting. Overall, I was very pleased with Lorenzo Mattotti's illustrations and Neil Gaiman's storytelling lived up to my wife's hype.

As usual, Neil Gaiman doesn't disappoint. This version of Hansel and Gretel is a terrific retelling of the story. It's faithful to the original tale and doesn't take much in the way of liberties, but Gaiman definitely leaves his mark, adding a layer of sympathy for the parents that adds quite a bit of depth to the story. This is the new definitive version of the tale.

I do think the scenes in the witch's house blazed by too quickly. There was quite a bit of clever exposition in the story, and the witch's house appears and is behind them in the blink of an eye. I'd have liked to read more about Hansel and Gretel's time with the witch.

As for the artwork, it is extremely dark and slashed through with broad strokes, which sets a wonderful mood for the story. The designs lack detail, however, and come across as unpolished, and not, I suspect, in the way that Mattotti was going for. They give the book a very noir-ish feel, but Mattotti is an incredibly talented artist, and I would have liked to see work that shines a bit more.

I've always been a huge fan of the Hansel & Gretel story and Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors so you can imagine my excitement when I heard about this collaboration.

To be honest, I'm a tad bit disappointed with this purchase. As other reviewers have pointed out, it virtually follows the original Hansel & Gretel story verbatim. I'm not complaining too much however, since Gaiman is already an exceptional author as is the Hansel & Gretel story. Mattotti's art is equally stunning. I honestly think I may have spent more time looking at the black/white illustrations than reading the actual story.

If you are planning on buying the book, I highly suggest you buy it from a small bookstore like I did instead of through Amazon. Yes, it'll be slightly more expensive, but you'll be supporting a dying local business (plus you get the satisfaction of looking for and walking out with your purchase)!

This is a truly magical telling of a classic tale.
Neil has an incredible talent of imbuing a rare magic into his work that burns through every word. He can make worlds and stories that, through another's pen, might appear mundane or listless, and breaths a sentience into them. They are living, touching, unnerving, heartfelt, heroic, and honest.
Neil's retelling of Hansel and Gretel is no exception.
It has new life, a new soul to it that I have not felt from other tellings, and each page feels like another step deeper into the forest.
Lorenzo's transfixing illustrations are deeply stirring, which greatly intensifies the experience. They are a beautiful accompaniment.
Exactly what I expected and hoped for. Beautiful. Thank you Neil.
