Gr 2-4--Complete and clear directions for putting on a play, from choosing parts and making props to setting the stage and assembling costumes, are supplied. Performers include a narrator and parts for three-to-five actors. While the elegant language of the folktale is sacrificed to colloquial readability, each story moves along quickly and predictably. Color photographs depicting a multicultural cast of children look posed but the youngsters seem to be having fun, even if self-consciously. Child-friendly features include speaking parts differentiated by a small icon and numbered directions for making hats, vests, skirts, and other essential props that can easily be created from common household items. Teachers would be assured of a stress-free production if they followed these templates even if this inviting series is aimed at children. They'll want to chuck that kiss that wakes Sleeping Beauty, though.
