When a successful writer of books for adults decides to traipse headlong into the world of children’s literature, the results are too often disastrous. From Donald Barthelme’s self-indulgent “Slightly Irregular Fire Engine” to the more recent, if disastrous in an entirely different way, “Rush Revere” series by Rush Limbaugh, adult authors have difficulty respecting the unique perspective of a child reader. Either they ignore the intended audience entirely and appeal to the parents with the pocket change or they dumb everything down and reduce the storytelling to insulting pabulum. This is not to say that all adult authors are unsuccessful. Sylvia Plath penned the remarkable “Bed Book” while Ted Hughes brought us “The Iron Giant”. Louise Erdrich will forever have my gratitude for her “Birchbark House” series and while I wouldn’t call Michael Chabon’s “Summerland” a roaring success, it at least had some good ideas. Then we come to Neil Gaiman. Mr. Gaiman is one of those rare adult authors to not only find monetary success in the field of children’s books but literary success as well. His “The Graveyard Book” won the prestigious Newbery Award, given once a year to the most distinguished written book of children’s literature in America. Like Donald Hall with his “The Ox-Cart Man”, Gaiman has successfully straddled two different literary forms. Unlike Hall, he’s done so repeatedly. His latest effort, “Hansel and Gretel” takes its inspiration from art celebrating an opera. It is, in an odd way, one of the purest retellings of the text I’ve had the pleasure to read. A story that begs to be spoken aloud, even as it sucks you into its unnerving darkness.

In the beginning there was a woodcarver and his pretty wife and their two children.

As usual, Neil Gaiman doesn't disappoint. This version of Hansel and Gretel is a terrific retelling of the story. It's faithful to the original tale and doesn't take much in the way of liberties, but Gaiman definitely leaves his mark, adding a layer of sympathy for the parents that adds quite a bit of depth to the story. This is the new definitive version of the tale.

I do think the scenes in the witch's house blazed by too quickly. There was quite a bit of clever exposition in the story, and the witch's house appears and is behind them in the blink of an eye. I'd have liked to read more about Hansel and Gretel's time with the witch.

As for the artwork, it is extremely dark and slashed through with broad strokes, which sets a wonderful mood for the story. The designs lack detail, however, and come across as unpolished, and not, I suspect, in the way that Mattotti was going for. They give the book a very noir-ish feel, but Mattotti is an incredibly talented artist, and I would have liked to see work that shines a bit more.

I am a die hard Neil Gaiman fan. I had hoped for a little more out of this book but for once is pretty much straight forwardly an old fashion fairy tale book. Sure Neil adds an element here and there and tries to flesh out the characters with a handful of extra lines but this is essentially the Hansel and Gretel we all know accompanied by a few haunting black and white charcoal-esque drawings. It's not bad. Just don't expect Neil's usual razzle dazzle.

Though the artwork was dark and foreboding, it casts its own spell that results in feeling as though you are in the shadows watching the story unfold. Though the story is a well known one, it still feels fresh in this telling. It's also (refreshing?) interesting to see that you don't have to be a stepmother to be cast as the villain. That trope is so common in fairy tales that we forget that evil and heartlessness can come from anywhere. And really, isn't that what children's stories are about, teaching them that the world can be dark?

I am a huge Neil Gaiman fan. This book is OK. They story of Hansel and Gretel is presented in a way that is very faithful to the original stories. This means a non-Disneyfied tale not for small children which you don't intend to scare to death. That said, I think it lacks the magic Neil brings to most of his writing. The accompanying art is rather dull, monochrome, and muddy. If you don't have an adult version of Grimm, this is a nice introduction to the raw story. If you are familiar with the old versions of the tale, there is nothing new here for you.

The story is much the standard Hansel and Gretels that I have read before - nothing surprising but it's written well. The artwork was a little disappointing in places. I like the style, and some of the illustrations are very effective. Others are a bit muddled and not very interesting. Overall, not a bad purchase, but I liked The Sleeper and the Spindle much better.
