DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!,
By TAWANYA M YOUNGBLOOD (FT POLK, LA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Hanson-Roberts Tarot Companion Book (Paperback)
If you are looking for a book that is a guide for learning tarot. Or if you are just starting to learn tarot reading then this is NOT the book for you. This book only gives a brief history, descriptions and explanation(not very good ones) of the cards. This book in now way will help you become a better tarot reader. It would be better to buy the cards and read the little book that comes with the cards, it has the same information as the book. The cards are beautiful and lovely but the book has no real purpose, save your money, buy the cards but not the book!!

I've worked with the Hanson-Roberts Tarot deck for 15 years almost exclusively and am always buying tarot books to get different views and ideas on the subject and to further my reading skils. I was excited about this book as it is the companion to my deck, but it was just ok. It is very standard, with the card meanings(about the same as the rider-waite deck), general layouts, and a nice section about the artist.
I think it's worth having if you own the deck, but don't expect any great insight with this book.

Not worth it,

This book is useless. I agree with the other review in that there is nothing extra in this book that is not contained in the little white booklet that comes with the deck. I recommend "Pictures from the Heart" by Sandra A. Thomson. This book is worth the money, is interesting for beginners and more advanced tarot readers.

A poetic, but yet very informative book on a classic Tarot deck.....,

I have both the companion books for the Hanson-Roberts (the other one being Tarot Unveiled: The Method to Its Magic by Laura A. Clarson) and this is by far the best one.
I am not sure why the other reviewers disliked this book so much...I found it very insightful, full of information and hidden magic. She describes the cards in a poetic way, perhaps bringing to your attention things you have missed. Also she has a wonderful chapter in there about the artist. More info at least than I have been able to learn anywhere else! If you love the Hanson-Roberts Tarot than this book is a must have in my opinion. You will get much from it and her writing is is inspired and informative.

Best tarot book I've ever used,

I've used a number of different tarot books, and this is by far the best. Detailed descriptions of each card, so that you can start understanding the meanings right away. The book doesn't tell you layouts, but those are simple and can be looked up and memorized very quickly.
It has lots and lots of relevant detail, without being overwhelming or boring. It is now the main book I use, and I've never been better at using the tarot.

Great little companion book,

I found the descriptions in this book very beautiful and appealing to my artistic side. I have many books on tarot but I am glad I have this to add to my collection. The author describes the cards in great detail thereby tapping into your intuition. She picks up on a lot of details that one might miss. It really is in the spirit of the faery nature of the deck so I think it is perfect. However, if you are new to tarot and want more information on the meaning and psychology of the Tarot, then I think another book would be necessary in conjunction to Susan Hanson's book. I would recommend Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack.

I've loved the Hanson-Roberts deck for so long. I got mine twenty-two years ago, and it's still one of my favorites. So, when I saw the book to accompany it I felt I should have it. I didn't really need it, since any book that uses a RWS type deck could be used to work with the Hanson-Roberts deck, it was more about finally having a book to specifically go with that deck. I mostly loved what I was able to learn after all these years about Mary Hanson-Roberts herself, in the bio on her! I do have to say I think they really cut corners with the book in making the pictures of the cards in the book in black & white. It feels like a casual xeroxed copy or something. I guess that was my biggest disappointment. I enjoyed author Susan Hansson's writing and descriptions of the cards, and I wish she'd had more editorial freedom to expand more of the material squeezed in at the end on using Tarot for meditation, and the various spreads and readings.
I do enjoy the handy compact size though, and overall am glad to have this book at last.

I had seen this book before, so I knew what I wanted. A page for each card, a picture of the card on the left and a detailed explanation on the right hand side. Divinatory meaning and reversed meaning in italics.
Only negative is the size of the book is slightly smaller than the previous edition. |
