This is an excellent book to carry with you when you are scouring for Arts and Craft pottery. It's full of hundreds of amazing color pictures for easy indetification as well as suggested prices. This book focuses on specific brands and highlights some big name brands to watch for. It is a great reference for both collectors and resellers. You will not be disappointed...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Weak Art Pottery Reference Book
If you're like me and depend upon accurate reviews when making a purchase, please pay attention. Any serious collector of American art pottery won't give this one the time of day. The book lacks in every regard. If you were thinking of buying this book to take with you in the field to help identify art pottery, forget it. For example, there is only ONE photograph...

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the authors for this wonderful reference book. I found the pictures to be of exceptional quality and the descriptions to be quite accurate.

For the experienced, as well as the novice owner/collector of American Pottery, this book is an invaluable guide. Take this book on your hunting trips... You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp, Clear and Concise, September 1, 2006
This review is from: Hanson's American Art Pottery Collection (Hardcover)
The Hanson' book on American Art Pottery is a most useful and easily read book of its kind. The photographs are sharp, clean and show the pottery, their shape, color and design as they were meant to be seen. Also, the production of the book presents itself well to the viewer. Although not a long time collector, I'd say this is a "must have" for new and seasoned collectors. I'd give this five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST American Art Pottery Source for Collectors, August 31, 2006

This review is from: Hanson's American Art Pottery Collection (Hardcover)
Having collected american art pottery for several decades, this book is the only one that covers a wide array of american pottery in concise, yet detailed form. It is a valuable tool for collectors new or seasoned--it provides beautiful, detailed color photographs of thousands of difficult to evaluate pieces--my only qualm is that I don't own all of the pottery in the book!!! The book also gives background into the "lives" of the artists who created these masterpieces, and of course, pricing guidelines. I will keep this book with me at all times as I continue to fuel my passion for collecting unique pieces of american history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hansons deliver another outstanding collecting guide!, August 31, 2006
This review is from: Hanson's American Art Pottery Collection (Hardcover)
This book has wonderful enlarged photo details that are essential for accurate identification and are invaluable to a pottery collector. For example, the book has photos of every glaze produced by Nelson McCoy which really goes far beyond most of the books I've seen. The summaries of the pottery makers give essential details (that other books do not provide) on how to identify a potential work of art. The updated pricing guides are very helpful as well. Thanks!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Weak Art Pottery Reference Book, April 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hanson's American Art Pottery Collection (Hardcover)
If you're like me and depend upon accurate reviews when making a purchase, please pay attention. Any serious collector of American art pottery won't give this one the time of day. The book lacks in every regard. If you were thinking of buying this book to take with you in the field to help identify art pottery, forget it. For example, there is only ONE photograph showing the bottom of a piece of art pottery. That's it! Unlike Kovel's (the gold standard in my opinion) that documents extensively the myriad ways art potteries stamped & identified their pieces, Hanson's seems to think this is unimportant. Instead, they devote four pages to acknowleding their friends and associates with color photographs of them with their pets! Pretty bizarre stuff for a book that claims to be an art pottery reference guide.

Even worse, major and significant art potteries, e.g., Grueby, and TECO are (incredibly) covered in one single page (with one photo), while bottom-rung potteries like McCoy, Burley Winter, et al, are afforded multiple pages and many images (but still, none showing the bottom markings). This is very peculiar, leaving the reader with the feeling that the authors featured in their book, what they could afford to collect.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some Nice Pictures, Little Real Information, April 12, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hanson's American Art Pottery Collection (Hardcover)
This book is just a representation of a personal collection. There is little valuable information to be had. Luckily, I purchased this book on-the-cheap from the secondary market and and even then I think that I spent too much.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Hanson should have checked his facts! I'm VERY disappointed, August 25, 2006
This review is from: Hanson's American Art Pottery Collection (Hardcover)
I purchased this book exclusively for the chapter about the artist / potter Rick Wisecarver. The very first "fact" in this chapter stated "Rick Wisecarver (1950 - 2003). Mr. Wisecarver died in 2002, just short of his 52 birthday. He was 51 years old when he died. There were also many pieces pictured in this chapter that were NOT made by Mr. Wisecarver. I know this because I am close friends with Rick Wisecarvers partner of over 29 years, Richard Sims. Mr. Sims is the last living authority on the art and pottery of Rick Wisecarver. Yet Mr. Hanson made no attempt to contact Mr. Sims to verify the authenticity of his information or the pottery pictured in this chapter. I can only wonder what other mistakes were made throughout this book. I'm VERY disappointed!
