5.0 out of 5 stars Bright, Colorful, Grows With Your Child!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice book with one problem
The type is incredibly hard to read because of the background colors! Other than that, a nice little counting book.

The bright colors and clear illustrations immediately attracted my two year old son. He flipped through the pages, identifying the numbers and pictures that he knew. As we read it together, I started to introduce the pictures that he was unfamiliar with, and some of the Hebrew and Yiddish words. As he grows, I can teach him more of the different languages, and read the Hannukah story with him. I think this is a beautiful book, one that my son will use and learn from for years to come.

What a beautiful book! The bright colors and great illustrations can keep anyone, even over the age of eight, interested. Kids and parents both can learn more about Judaism, Chanukah, Hebrew and Yiddish in a fun way. A great debut for Emily Sper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!, November 20, 2002

It's rare enough to find a book that is also a work of art in and of itself, but a children's book with such high artistic standards is a unique accomplishment. Hanukkah: A Counting Book is a delight to explore, and is guaranteed to entertain adults as well as children. Children will love the fun graphics as they learn to count while absorbing the meaning of the holiday, and parents will be intrigued with the unique logic of the text and graphics, which are woven together in a creative structure which unfolds progressively, much as the holiday itself unfolds from night to night.

This book is unique and beautiful. The vivid colors are so striking against the black background. My children just love looking at the pictures and learning to count in Yiddish and Hebrew. A thoroughly enjoyable and striking book. I highly recommend it!

Because my kids really love this book, I brought a copy to Israel to give to their cousins. Had I known the kids were going to fight over it, I'd have brought one for each of them!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the study of Hanukkah in elementary school, September 7, 2008
This review is from: Hanukkah: A Counting Book In English - Hebrew - Yiddish (Paperback)
One of the major benefits of the movement towards multiculturalism is that students in elementary schools are now exposed to December holidays other than Christmas. They now combine the celebrations of the Christian Christmas, Jewish Hanukkah and African Kwanza. That was not the case when I was in school, during the three years I was in junior high there was one student who always insisted on saying "Happy Hanukkah" when others said "Merry Christmas." I eventually had to ask him what it meant because I did not know.
This book is an excellent resource for the inclusion of Hanukkah in elementary school classes. The counting to eight for the eight candles of Hanukkah is done in English, Yiddish and Hebrew. A few additional words are included as different objects are counted. The book closes with a brief description of the origin of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
