Wahoo, also known in Hawaii as Ono, this delicacy is a type of mackerel similar to tuna, but it has a lighter, less fishy taste. It is very hard to find outside of the Pacific and is currently available in this form only in Hawaii or Samoa. I love this tuna. I've had it many times, although it's very hard to find if your not living in the islands. It does not have the normal "fishy" taste that regular tuna has. The only downfall is that it is only packaged in oil, so extra rinsing is necessary.

I am, literally, sitting in front of my monitor here in Hawaii eating from a can of Van Camp's chunk style Wahoo tuna. Along with some rice, it's heavenly. As much as I love fresh ahi (tuna), this unique taste and texture are now a favorite dish of mine. Healthy (even with the soy oil), satisfying, and appealing to my Hawaii-influenced taste buds, this is a rare circumstance in which seeking out a canned meal is worth the extra effort. The shelf life and convenience (much more mailable than fresh tuna) and added bonuses for the savvy palate. Aloha!
