Fun, colorful and nicely built.

My 2 1/2 year old loves it, although she was a bit frustrated at first that the balls didn't move when she just traced the paths with her fingers...I blame technology.

I bought this toy (and the turtle one) for my twins, who are almost 3 years old. I bought them because mazes are a pre-writing activity, and I thought a magnetic maze would help my kids understand that they have to follow the paths, not cross them. The kids like the mazes ok, but I think they'll enjoy them more when they're older. There are two things that are disappointing to me about these: 1) my kids quickly learned how to detach the blue magnet tool (easily reattached, but it means I have to keep track of them), and 2) if they hold the blue tool in the correct pencil position (at a bit of an angle), it loses magnetic connection with the ball. The tool has to be held straight up and down to maintain magnet connection, which does not help them with correct pencil position.

I'm still glad I bought these, though. They are a great self-contained toy for travel. My kids do understand the concept of getting the balls into the correct color slots, and within a year, their fine motor skills will be at the perfect level for controlling the blue tool. The mazes are very colorful, which they obviously like, and the puzzles appear well-made. I just bought them a little too early, I think.

This is a very nice bead maze but I must say the one I received was slightly different than the one show. If I had know that the magnetic pen comes off the maze, I probably wouldn't have bought it because my kids lose things all the time. It has a plastic closure that snaps on and off at the midway point on the blue cord. There also was a defect in the paint finish underneath the layer of plastic. It might be a very dark vein in the birch plywood or a mark made during the manufacturing of this product. Either way, it detracts from the looks of this product. I purchased this item on sale and do not think its worth the original retail. I would buy another puzzle like this from the same manufacturer if it was on sale again, but only if it was cheaper than what I paid for this one. As far as the ease of use goes...My three year old got a little frustrated at first but was able to get a hang of this puzzle after 20 minutes of practice. It does take practice to get the coordination needed to hold the pen at the right angle and get the balls to follow the pen, but isn't that why we buy these things as parents? To give them something to do? To learn new skills?
