I'm tired of the petulant, sulky, angry heroine that is always focused on herself and won't deal with reality. I found myself completely bored with the heroine with in about 10 pages. It was as if the author had cut and paste the same dialog over and over again. It got old very quickly. There was no depth of character, no interest in the new environment or the other...

After reading a couple of the negative reviews about redundent dialogue and annoying interactions, I didn't know if I would like this book. Boy, am I glad I ignored those reviews!! Kiervan and Alanna were quite a dynamic couple, and I LOVED their interactions.

Alanna, arriving to 19th century Ireland from the 20th century, was such a strong, intense character that never compromised her belief that if she loved, it would be forever. Unfortunately, despite their magnetic attraction to each other, Kiervan only wanted to experience Alanna until the "fires burned out." The fact that he is engaged to marry another woman also posed the biggest challenge between Alanna giving herself to a man who would never be completely hers.

I have to say that throughout the story, there were some great readable moments! I loved her passionate exchanges with Kiervan (as she is a passionate individual), but I also loved her exchanges with other characters in the book. The scene on the boat before she returned to Castle O'Connell was a gem! Both characters evolved and developed, and contrary to one review, there was character growth. They were by no means flat characters!

A good sign of an enjoyable book is being able to sympathize with both characters throughout the story. I understood Alanna's resolve to stay true to her belief of a relationship with a man who could give himself completely, and not share the affections with another woman. I also sympathized with Kiervan's frustration at his attraction for Alanna, but not being able to break his solid oath to marry another.

The last good sign of a good book is when you don't want it to end. I can read a book in a day-and-a-half. This time I slowly read the book, took my time enjoying the characters, and didn't really want to have the book end. I will keep this book and read it again. I'm sure I will see even more in the characters than I did in the first read. Take a gander at this book if you enjoy historical romance novels, with adventure and some of the complexities of love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of adventure, sexual tension, April 29, 2000
This review is from: It Happened One Night (Paperback)
After traveling back into time, the heroine finds herself in the middle of the Irish conflict. She and the hero race pell mell over the countryside, escaping all sorts of foes.

I found the heroine's reaction to everything believable. She travels back in time, but she doesn't curl up in shock. Instead, she bounces back. The hero is a rogue, but so much more than that.

Both the characters have depths and backgrounds that are revealed slowly. The secondary characters are a mixed bag. One bad spot was Kiervan's would-be fiancee. Aaargh! Why did he have to struggle so over the decision about whether to marry her?

I gave this book at B+ at All About Romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved every spellbinding moment of the story!!, April 19, 1998

This review is from: It Happened One Night (Paperback)
I was looking for something different in Historical romance and came upon this book on the shelf. With curious intent, I bought it and began to read it that very night. I couldn't put it down! I had to read every single word of the story. Talk about spellbinding and intense. I've always loved cross-time stories and this is one of the best I've read in a LONG time. Having gone through a recent bout of the flu, I picked it up again and the magic and the power of the words STILL holds me at the edge of my seat! To Leslie LaFoy I stand tall and yell "BRAVO!" I await the outcome of more of her books! Please, let me know when they come out!! Spellbinding and thrilling books such as this should not be left to just one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Time-travel romance, August 26, 1998

This is how it is supposed to be done. An intelligently written time-travel romance with wonderful characters that draw you into the story. I especially like the scene where Alanna Chapman faces the British militia and uses her street smarts to fend them off. A great heroine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magical Read, September 9, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: It Happened One Night (Paperback)
Alanna Chapman knows that her beloved Aunt Maude O'Sullivan needs her. So even though it is tax season back in Durango, Colorado, the CPA and her fiancé, Bill Boyer, trek high into the Rockies to visit her aunt, who prefers isolation and no telephones. When they reach the cabin, Alanna finds her aunt is dying. Maude passes her magical Dragon Heart stone to Alanna, telling her that one day she will believe in the magic. She also asks Alanna her to spread her ashes while chanting an ancient Celtic burial rite that needs to occur two weeks before the tax deadline. Alanna cannot refuse Maude anything, so she agrees.

When Alanna performs the Celtic ritual, she finds herself traveling through time to 1803 Ireland where she meets Kiervan des Morceaux, who has been sent to recruit her as a seer so she can fulfill an ancient prophesy. With only her stone and her inexperience in magic, Alanna must find a way to keep the peace even if it means losing the man she now loves with all her heart.

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is a very humorous time travel romance due to the magical, and often-time bellicose (at least towards each other) lead characters who will captivate readers' hearts. Though the sexual segments do not blend as well into an overall wonderful story line, Leslie LaFoy shows incredible depth and talent in her debut novel. This is a must read for fans of the time travel sub-genre.

Please...I can't bring myself to finish this book. Give me character development like Elizabeth Thornton any day of the week! I'm a big fan of time travel...but I'd never buy a book by this author again. Period. I wasted my money on this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent spell-binding time travel!, February 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: It Happened One Night (Paperback)
I was very pleasantly surprised. This is one of the view books that toughed my emotions. It contained humour, suspense, bravado and titillating romance. The characters Alanna and Kiervan had sparks flying. I couldn't put the book down. Thanks Ms. LaFoy for the wonderful read. I look forward to other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grab a hold of this one with both hands!!!, December 31, 1998
By
This review is from: It Happened One Night (Paperback)
What a wonderful story. Ms. Lafoy has done a masterful job spinning the threads for this tale. The characters of Alanna and Kiervan are artfully formed and compliment each other perfectly...who said like temperments can't attract? The story has many levels, and Ms. Lafoy keeps drawing each level in, until a whole story unfolds. The sexual tension between the hero and heroine spark and ignite (though I might have liked to have seen a little more ignition). Out of the whole story, my only criticism is how easily everyone accepts time travel, as if it was an everyday occurance. I know early 19th century people were superstisious and might have believed in witches, but they seemed to be a little too complacent about this kind of miracle. Don't miss reading this treat!!!
