Book Description

8 and up3 and up
Susie Morgenstern delivers two appealingly offbeat stories, reminiscent in their lighthearted charm of her Batchelder honor book, A Book of Coupons. In "The Autograph," when Claudette’s teacher asks the class to bring in a treasured object, Claudette proudly displays an autograph from the famous cellist Rostropovich. Surely, everyone will be awestruck. But they don’t seem to care. In "Our Teacher’s Boyfriend," Mademoiselle Raysun’s classroom has gotten a telephone/fax machine. No longer are they all alone in the countryside! Except Mlle. Raysun’s boyfriend won’t stop calling and faxing his messages of LOVE. How will they ever get anything done? With witty black/white illustrations by Serge Bloch, these endearing, funny stories are sure to delight.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. Morgenstern offers two short stories, each with a school setting. In "The Autograph," Mademoiselle Dupont challenges her students to bring in a treasured object. Claudette feels badly because no one appreciates her autograph from cellist Rostropovich, until Mademoiselle Dupont requires everyone to bring in an autograph from a famous person. In "Our Teacher's Boyfriend," Mademoiselle Raysun desperately tries to attend to her pupils despite incessant phone calls and faxes from her boyfriend. Both stories are light and fun, and have a distinctive French flavor that will intrigue American children. Morgenstern's characters--both teachers and pupils--are easily recognizable and endearing, and they are sure to have universal appeal. Bloch's cartoonlike art helps to break up the text and also adds humor; don't miss the first illustration in "Boyfriend," which shows technicians entangled in wires as they try to install a phone/fax. A great choice for reading aloud or alone; "Boyfriend" is especially apropos for Valentine's Day. Kay Weisman
