Biography

The Yardbirds are mostly known to the casual rock fan as the starting point for three of the greatest British rock guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Undoubtedly, these three figures did much to shape the group's sound, but throughout their career, the Yardbirds were very much a unit, albeit a rather unstable one. And they were truly one of the great rock bands; one whose ... Read more in Amazon's Yardbirds Store

Editorial Reviews

For the most comprehensive, single cd covering the yardbirds entire career, look no further than raven's stunning 27-track, multi-label collection 'happenings ten years time ago 1964-1968'. Originally released as an earlier edition in 1990, and now presented with revised tracking and upgraded with the highest quality audio and a superb booklet featuring detailed notes and a range of rare images, this remains the first and best collection to cross-license material in order to cover all phases of the band's career. The history of the band is well known - eric clapton, jeff beck and jimmy page - and this is the essential way to delve into that history. It's all here - guitar innovation, breathtaking virtuosity, pioneering psychedelia, feedback and fuzz tone - but above all just great songs. All the band's landmark recordings are present and correct: 'for your love', 'the train kept a-rollin'', 'heart full of soul', 'i'm a man', 'over under sideways down', 'shapes of things', 'happenings ten years time ago', 'stroll on', 'little games'. And furthermore, there's the storming live version of 'smokestack lightning', the metallic 'psycho daisies' and the mesmerizing 'think about it'. The sheer breadth of music the yardbirds created and the extent of their influence remains unparalleled. This is the ultimate single cd of the yardbirds' finest 78 minutes, featuring the cream of the band's recordings with clapton, beck and page.

This review should really be incomplete because I have the previous 1990/91 version of this CD, also on the Raven label and pressed in Australia. This CD appears to be a reissue with a few track substitutions. The original 28-track release contained "Baby What's Wrong" as the opening track along with "Got Love If You Want It" (taken from their first official LP which was recorded in 1964 at the Marquee Club) and "Ten Little Indians" from their last LP 'Little Games' which featured Jimmy Page. The original release had varying sound quality from track to track, which presumably has been corrected with modern production techniques now available. The 27-track reissue substitutes "Smokestack Lightning" from the Marquee concert and "White Summer" from the Page-era line up for these three tracks. The reissue probably a sightly more judicious track selection since "Ten Little Indians" is no big loss, but although "Smokestack Lightning" is a superior track from the Marquee show what's the point of including it here? Anyone can put on a blindfold and approach a stack of Yardbirds CDs, pull one out, and chances are "Smokestack" will be on it. I think Raven should have put on a nice rare cut such as "Avron Knows" which did not materialize until the 1990's. On another issue, most Yardbirds releases, even the ones on the Repertoire Label which are well thought out, seem to use the same recordings which sound like they are be copies used for licensing. Are master tapes from the Yardbirds even available? It would be nice for some label, Raven, Repertoire, or somebody, to find the original source tapes and do a thorough remastering of them, similar to what the Rolling Stones did when they reissued their Decca/Abkco material. I look forward to hearing other listener's thoughts on this.

Why no stereo remix???????
From what I've read, the Yardbirds first manager, Giorgio Gomelsky is holding the original, 1st generation, 3 track session tapes. Word has it, he wants to be paid a fortune to turn these tapes over for remixing. This encompasses all the stuff through the Beck years. It's really too bad. This is important music and it deserves to be given the royal treatment by the same folks that recently restored the Beatles catalog. I'd love to hear "Happenings Ten Years Ago" or "The Train Kept a Rolling" in true stereo.

No Yardbirds collection will ever be complete without remastering the original source tapes and issuing Stereo tracks such as ' Happenings Ten Years Time Ago'. Why do we have to wait so long for someone to get a clue ? The Yardbirds deserve to have their catalog straightened out properly! True Stereo Yardbirds-Only a Dream!!

I purchased this Yardbirds audio CD for my brother for his 63rd birthday. He was a huge Yardbirds fan in the 60s and was totally blown away when the gift arrived at his home. He told me that he takes it out in his truck and plays it full blast when he is driving by himself. What a thrill for me to know that I gave him a present that brought back so many great memories. Thanks, Amazon, for helping me bring birthday happiness to my "kid brother"!

OK. Here is the deal. The Yardbirds have been compiled over and over again, usually covering the Clapton & Beck years only. Jimmy Page brought a new urgency to the band and Little Games is arguably their most consistent LP - thank you Mickie Most! With both Page and Beck on board, they created one of the psychedelic era's most vibrant songs - Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, in which the two guitar masters trade explosive riffs. This compilation includes all of their "hits" and includes some of their non-LP singles - Puzzles and Think About It. Sadly missing is Goodnight Sweet Josephine. Although the song itself is more of a bar sing-along, the Page solos are dandy. Pick up the expanded version of Little Games to get all of these later tracks. Hopefully this will eventually be available on MP3. Highly recommended.

This disc not only has the Yardbirds' hits, it has a good sampling of songs featuring each of the superstar lead guitarists - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. The last track, Think About It, features a guitar solo from Jimmy Page that sounds a lot like his guitar solo on Dazed and Confused, which Led Zeppelin recorded several months after the Yardbirds broke up. This disc is well worth the money.

This is one awesome CD! The sound reproduction is great and I love the colorful historical coverage of the band and its tunes in the insert. Yeah, I also thought of "Dazed and Confused" when I heard Jimmy Page's solo on track 27, "Think About It." I also have Yardbirds Greatest Hits Volume One (1964-1966) from Rhino (1986), but I love this expanded collection much better. Couldn't wait to stick the CD in my car Bose system and hear track 17, "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago." I hadn't heard this since 1967! I remember the Yardbirds playing this tune live on a snowy winter evening in '67 in Lima, Ohio. In this 27-track collection you get the full taste of Yardbirds music - rhythm and blues, psychedelia and dark social commentary from this era. Whether you're a nostalgic 60-something like me or younger and not as familiar with the band, this is a must-have CD. The Yardbirds are one of the most talented, innovative and groundbreaking bands ever!
