4.0 out of 5 stars Not being a wrestling fan..., July 31, 2002
By
This review is from: Happenstance (Audio CD)
...I decided to pick up the original Fozzy CD at the request of a friend of mine (a real Chris Jericho fan). My friend new how much I enjoy old school heavy metal 80's and early 90's music and that would be one of the reasons why he recommended it to me. I loved that one and I love this one just as much is not more. Irvine or Jericho or Mongoos' or whatever you want to call him has an extremely powerfulvoice perfect for this genre. And the members of Stuck Mojo who make up the rest of the band meld perfectly with Irvine/Jericho/McQueen. I would not go so far as to say they top the people who originally sang these songs, but I will say this CD definately earns 4 stars in my book. I would give it 4 and a half, but alas I cannot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, classic heavy metal with a new twist, August 12, 2002

This review is from: Happenstance (Audio CD)
I'm a fairly passive wrestling fan, and I didn't know much about Jericho when I got the first Fozzy album, except that his in-ring antics, like when he railed into Stephanie McMahon, reminded me of a young Ted Nugent. Despite my lack of wrestling knowledge about Y2J, I loved that this guy was doing covers of Krokus, Twisted Sister, and Judas Priest songs that I never thought anyone still listened to. So now, two years later, I picked up Happenstance and I love it! I thought the original songs might be a bit soft, but they're actually well-written and are a good touch to the cover tunes. Speaking of covers, they redo songs by Iron Maiden, the Scorpions, Judas Priest, and even WASP. I think their cover of "Mob Rules" is better than the original Sabbath/Dio version. The Stuck Mojo backup band sounds great, the production comes through a lot more on this album, with really punchy drums and excellent lead guitar tone. And Jericho can actually SING! He's taking on Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson leads like it was no problem! I didn't get into the whole fake band/history thing, and I haven't seen the bonus video as I don't have a Windows computer at home, but overall, I think this will stay in the player for the rest of the summer and beyond.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like metal, this is your album, November 2, 2002

Fozzy (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Dublin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Happenstance (Audio CD)
WOW! This is the best metal album in ages! Fozzy rocks with their instruments and the vocals make each song stand out even more than they would otherwise.
The cover songs are done in Fozzy's own unique way and are as good, or better in some cases, as the originals. The whole album comes off upbeat, as if the band enjoy every second of playing, the same way as you'll feel from listening to it.
The Mob Rules is excellent and Freewheel Burning is absolutely brilliant. The lead singer, Chris Jericho, does amazing on this song. The only song he slips up on is L.O.V.E. Machine, but compared to the original, and accompanied with Stuck Mojo's playing, this is a must-hear.
The album kicks off with a deadly instrumental and leads into an original. The originals really stand out amongst the covers, and they excel when they are played. To Kill A Stranger and Crucify Yourself are my favourite songs, purely for their outstanding quality.
And any album with Balls to the Wall is worth the money. Fozzy pull off this song flawlessly.
All of the other songs are brilliant and any true metal fan must have this album in their collection. I hope you get as much enjoyment as I still do from listening to it.
