A DISNEY GEM IS FINALLY RESCUED FROM THE VAULTS,
By A Customer
This review is from: Happiest Millionaire (Audio CD)
It is indeed a pleasure to have Disney release the original soundtrack to it's 1967 classic "The Happiest Millionaire" on compact disc! They even kept the original album artwork with the old Buena Vista Records logo in the corner [!]I saw this movie for the first time ever in all it's road-show glory on DVD and immediately fell in love with it. I am a BIG Lesley Ann Warren fan and she sparkles in her film debut! The entire cast gives their all in each and every number. The multi-talented Tommy Steele makes the most of his big numbers ("I'll Always Be Irish", "Let's Have A Drink On It" and "Fortuosity"). This is a must-have for any musical and/or Disney fan. Now if they would only re-release "The One and Only, Genuine Original Family Band" (The movie AND the soundtrack).

The Sherman Brothers' score for THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE is one of their greatest, and most under-rated. Hopefully, this new reissue of the original soundtrack album will help its reputation. There are some gorgeous songs in this score, including Lesley Ann Warren's "Valentine Candy", her magical duet with John Davidson in "Are We Dancing?" and Tommy Steele's infectious "Fortuosity". However, its a shame that during the remastering process, they did not restore the dance interlude in "I'll Always Be Irish" or the additional music in the Overture (as heard in the recent Road Show DVD version). Other choice numbers include the hilarious "There Are Those", with Geraldine Page and Gladys Cooper; John Davidson's spirited "Detroit"; and Lesley Ann Warren's duet with Joyce Bulifant singing the delightful "Bye-Yum Pum Pum". Fans will relish this long-overdue soundtrack to one of the greatest Disney films ever made.

Not the best Sherman, but VERY good,

There are indeed some wonderful songs here, and I guess FORTUOSITY, WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT, BYE-YUM PUM PUM and the single version of IT WON'T BE LONG 'TIL CHRISTMAS are really the best. But there is NO BOOKLET again, just like in BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS, and there is no instrumental score. I really think Disney should give this soundtracks the same treatment it gave to the "bigger" ones, like MARY POPPINS or ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

A WALT Disney Classic!,

The last live-action film Walt personally supervised, I've always loved THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE. This music is lyrical and flowing, I especially like "Are We Dancing" and "Fortuosity". You can hear instrumentals of these songs on Main Street in Disneyland. I remember seeing this movie when it first came out....I like having the music for my iPod.

Some sound recordings from movies are very hard to find. I was happy that you had this one available as it was a gift for my 25 year old daughter.

Wonderful Sherman Brothers Soundtrack,
This review is from: Happiest Millionaire (Audio CD)
I remember this score from years ago when the film was first released and the music always stuck with me....I have now replaced my LP with the CD and especially enjoy the extra number about Christmas that is included and was not in the original version..I have the Road Show DVD version of the film, and to my knowledge that is the longer version of the film...this is one that is very seldom seen on TV, so it is nice to have the recording. It is great seeing Eddie Hodges and Paul Petersen in rare movie roles and also hearing them on the recording with a flair for the comedic, when protecting their sister's honor (With "Watch your Footwork") a real stab at comedy for them and well done. All of the singing is well done, especially Tommy Steele (well known for his work in Finian's Rainbow, Half a Sixpence, and others, most recently Singin in the Rain). He still performs at the age of over 70. Also fine work from Leslie Warren, John Davidson, etc. Although, probably not the greatest music from the pens of the Sherman Bros. it is certainly a worthy additon to any collection of their music ..Enjoy!!

"The Happiest Millionaire" contains one of Richard and Robert Sherman's
best scores.Sure,it's not up to their splendid "Mary Poppins" music, but it is lovely and enjoyable on its own terms. The best songs are "It Won't Be Long 'Till Christmas" and "Are We Dancing?".Tommy Steele,John Davidson, Lesley Ann Warren, and(surprise!)Fred MacMurray do the best vocally.Musical director Jack Elliott and the Disney orchestra do an excellent job with the score. This is an underrated soundtrack worth listening to.

If you enjoyed the movie "The Happiest Millionaire", you will love this soundtrack! Now when I'm in the car I can listen to the songs of one of my favorite Disney Musicals and even though I can't see it, the story comes to life again in my mind's eye through song.
