Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kaufman, director of the Option Institute and author of A Land Beyond Tears ( LJ 4/1/82), contends that if you change a belief or attitude you can change your life. A decision to pursue happiness, he claims, can improve relations with others: "We can engineer our own responses, choosing love over hate, peace over conflict and happiness over depression." The first five sections relate Kaufman's philosophy and offer stories of clients' successful changes while in therapy. Section six has short chapters detailing shortcuts to happiness. The book has a four-page bibliography and two pages of additional readings. A cut above most self-help books; recommended.

I'm an expert in happiness. My web site on the subject draws 7 to 15 thousand hits a day because it's all about happiness. I tell them this:
Buy Happiness is a Choice. Don't read it at first. Just turn straight to the chapter called "Shortcuts." There are six shortcuts. Practice one shortcut a week for six weeks. When you have done that the quality of every day of your life that follows will surpass the happiness you've experienced prior to following this recipe. You'll never be able to be as unhappy as you have been and you'll never be able to be unhappy as long as you have been in the past. Every day will be happier.
That's why I say it's the most valuable chapter ever written. The one thing every one of us wants is more happiness. That one chapter, practiced, delivers.

If you know in your heart that being positive & happy is indeed possible, but the world around you does not seem to agree - you are not alone! A terrific book that shares huge challenges others (just like you & me) have had & how they overcame them. The miracle & power of sticking to your beliefs when the rest of the world says you're wrong. We make choices every day. Thanks to Barry Kaufman (& his family), here is a book to help us survive the negative influences of society & persevere in our search & commitment to living a happy life. We can have happiness!

This superb book is one to read and buy for family and friends. Barry Neil Kaufman, therapist, author, motivational speaker, and co-founder of the Option Institute, has observed that despite disappointments, illnesses, and physical and emotional problems, people who are most successful in finding happiness share certain traits. He shows us how to use these traits to change our lives quickly, easily, and without pain.

This self affirming, positive and encouraging book is an excellent Rx for a happier life. I, too, took heart AND learned from the "Shortcuts" chapter. I have found that Barry Neil Kaufman has consistently been a source of comfort and encouragement. This is a book I certainly hope everyone will read. This is exceptionally high caliber and will only serve to make one's life richer and more empowered.

I love this book and keep copies with me to give to people. I recently gave a young woman a copy that was my flight attendant. She approached me and said that I just seemed so happy that she had to ask me why. I was on my way home from a weeklong program at the Option Institute. I am asked the question quite a bit these days. Usually about my optimism, or my energy, but the bottom line is that I have learned through the books and teaching of the Kaufmans to truly choose happiness and live it. This book was my first step into the fabulous life I now live. I have seen so many people transform their lives with the tools available to everyone who wants to live a life of love and happiness. Take the first step, read this book.

"Happiness Is A Choice" was recommended to me by someone I highly respect, a very happy and successful professional. My reading this book paid off with immediate dividends when application of a passage at the beginning helped me end a tiff I was having with my then-girlfriend. That passage reads: "I realized that neither one of us held the truth, only a vision we had each created and then used to embrace our situation" (page 4). Recognizing this reality worked nicely in my own particular circumstance, and for that I was grateful. However, while delving deeper into the book, I soon discovered a major recurring problem: the principles espoused are often overly broad and cannot and should not be applied in all situations at all times, as the author, Barry Neil Kauffman, suggests (e.g. on page 8, the idea that you can "just claim happiness at any time."). But since there is some very valuable information within the pages of "Happiness Is A Choice," I would on the whole recommend the book while cautioning readers to be alert for concepts that get stretched too far.

I very much like the author's overall focus on the importance of happiness, and truly appreciate his stressing of the benefits of remaining positive. I also found the shortcuts to happiness that begin on page 172 to be quite useful, but unfortunately routinely overstated.

For example, the first shortcut is to "Make Happiness THE Priority" in your life. I would agree that happiness should be "A" priority, but making happiness "THE" absolute priority in all circumstances, as the author suggests, is untenable.

This book was written before "To Love Is to Be Happy With" and I've always thought that the titles should have been reversed because this one is all too obviously a work in progress by comparison with "To Love Is to Be Happy With", which is all about how to choose happiness in your attitudes, your thinking and your use of language and it offers clear strategies, which this one does not. This one is more a story about part of the author's life - it is interesting but does not offer the same level of practical help.

Later note: "The Longevity Project" by Friedman and Martin is a groundbreaking assessment of what is really directly linked to happiness and health. Don't miss!
