Product Description

The Happy Bird Deluxe Wild Bird Solar Sipper is ideal for keeping fresh, clean drinking water available to the wild birds in your backyard. Unlike a bird bath, the Solar Sipper covers the water, keeping dirt and debris out of the water while allowing birds to drink easily from the 1.5 inch diameter opening. The outer shell insulates the water so it stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Its unique solar design defends it against winter ice to temperatures of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Simply fill the Solar Sipper with clean water and place it in the summer shade or the winter sun. This is the perfect watering station for your backyard birds. Happy Bird's Deluxe Wild Bird Solar Sipper has a 7 inch diameter basin and holds 1 quart of water.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great concept - poor design, February 13, 2007
By
J.E. (BOULDER, CO USA) - See all my reviews
I researched the Solar Sipper well before buying one and after all the glowing reviews, ordered 4. 2 were for myself and 2 to give as gifts. However, upon receiveing them, I discovered a major problem. The lid is very difficult to remove, and even MORE difficult to put back on, once it has water in it. I certainly would not givethese as gifts if they are this hard to put the lids on. Certainly, anyone with hand problems or diminished strength will have problems for sure.

After fighting with my two Sipper baths several times and spilling a whole bath worth of water on myself more than once, I called the company I had ordered from and discovered their return policy to be so restricitve that I called the manufacturer myself. The manufacturer, Happy Bird Corp., was wonderful and gave me not only some instructions about how to possibly cure the problem, but also said they would refund me the total amount of my purchase, less shipping of course, if I still had issues with it and to just skip the lousy online retailer I bought them from.

So, here is the little trick they told me, though I have yet to try it. They said there is a little burr of plastic around the inside edge of the outer container were the lid snaps in. I am to take a knife and scrap off some of the burred edge and see if that helps. They said others have had this problem too and this has proven to help. I shall see. I'll write an update after giving this a try.

UPDATE: The scrapping trick did help! Will be doing this too all of them, including the ones I plan to give as gifts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Alternative to Electric, January 31, 2010
This review is from: Happy Bird DLXSS Deluxe Wild Bird Solar Sipper (Lawn & Patio)
I've had one of these solar sippers for several winters for my chickens. I'm back to get another one.

Its basically a black plastic bowl with black lid and the dark color absorbs heat from the sun. The red outer bowl is big enough to leave a space in between to two and collect a little heat to insulate the inner bowl. That's it.

While this bowl does not guarantee unfrozen water all of the time, it does keep water from freezing longer than a regular bowl or bird bath if kept in a sunny spot out of the wind. I've even had it freeze overnight and start to thaw the next day on a 15-20 degree sunny day. Its plastic so the sun and elements has aged it and made it brittle and its chipped, but that's longer than I expected it to last, and I'm glad they're still around so I can buy another one. Here's a tip: Leave it out without the lid at first so the birds know it holds water, then add the lid and keep it reasonably full so if they try it they get instant success. My chickens and the wild birds didn't catch on until I tried this, because the hole is very small and they can't see the water.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solar Sipper, January 31, 2007
By

Solar Sipper worked as advertised. Recently got down in the 20's where I live and during the night some ice formed on the insides. After the sun came up, the ice melted. The birds initially had a time figuring out that it was a water dish, but it didn't take long and they were happy to use it. We also liked the bright color. The raccoons were another story. We had set ours down on the ground and the raccoons kept taking the top off. Probably should have bought the one with a bracket and placed it where they couldn't get it. Would recommend this product.
