Happy Birthday, Bach contains performances improvised by classical pianist John Bayless with variations on familiar themes composed by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Ravel, Stravinsky, Gershwin, and the performer himself. Woven throughout these variations is the tune we Americans use to sing Happy Birthday. So half the fun is hearing the familiar themes and the other half is finding Happy Birthday within the music. I confess I play this on my own birthday, and I enjoy giving it to other classical music fans. Listening to "Happy Birthday, Bach" feels playful, feels like winning a game or completing a crossword puzzle in ink or watching a Chuck Jones cartoon -- an escape from everything ordinary.

This CD as well as "Bach Meets the Beatles" are favorites of mine. As a keyboard performer myself (harpsichord, piano, organ) I really appreciate the technique, sensitivity, creativity, and style of this pianist. Most pianists in my experience "ride" the sustaining pedal when they play baroque music but Bayless does not. He captures the crispness and bounce that baroque keyboard instruments produce. He cleverly combines typical musical gestures with melodies of the composers he imitates in addition to inserting Happy Birthday somewhere in each improvisation. I had the good fortune to hear Bayless live and he is amazing in his ability to improvise. For the 2nd half of his concert, he asked the audience to call out titles of pieces they liked and he proceeded to improvise on the songs mentioned! He probably is the finest classical keyboard artist alive today in his improvisational skills. In addition to Bach, Bayless copies the styles and sounds of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Gershwin then concludes with an improvisation he calls "Bayless." I especially enjoyed his quotations of Stravinsky's Petrouchka. I highly recommend the CD to anyone who enjoys improvisation. One smiles a lot while listening to the different styles combined with a melody that we all know well. I own 7 of his CDs and enjoy them all.
