5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music...DEFINITELY worth getting!, February 19, 2008
This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
The Local Tourists created an album filled with fine music. I find myself humming the catchy tunes...and there is such variety! The lyrics evoke many emotions - and actually bring forth laughter at times. The harmonizing and lead singing is great...and the music is very polished. This album has a little something for everyone. I highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars College Pop Meets Rufus Rock, January 31, 2008
By
This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
Fans of Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds will totally dig this album that hearkens back to 80s indie rock when REM, They Might Be Giants, and the Violent Femmes were writing tuneful songs that really rocked and with lyrics that you actually followed along with in the liner notes so you didn't miss a syllable. It is such a relief that this kind of music is being recorded again. Thank you!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic freshman effort!, January 28, 2008

This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
This is a brilliant album in every respect. Quite a variety of musical styles for one disc...daring in my opinion, but it works! The songs are catchy and hummable without being cliche."Lickey" is an epic. "Six for a Parlay" is raucous, funny, and smart. "Amanda"...simple but so poignant! "Katie"--an unexpected trip into "Hee-Haw" territory, but don't let that scare you, it's a great song! Really, "Happy Birthday" is a total musical banquet. Not a dud in the set. Congratulations, guys, and be prepared to give us more!

These guys run the gamut as far as style and spectrum on this album. The sounds range from Barenaked Ladies to bluegrass (in a good way)...and almost everything in between. This is a must have for any true fan of music. Buy it, press play and enjoy. Hopefully we will hear more from these guys soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart lyrics, great songwriting, and unparalleled vocals, January 17, 2008

This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
These guys have made an incredibly enjoyable album. They cover a wide spectrum of sounds and styles without degenerating into gratuitous eclecticism. Whether they are mixing humor with sincerity, or pop hooks with interesting arrangements, they hit the mark. And the vocals are pretty much unequalled by anyone making popular music these days. It all adds up to an album that sounds interesting, feels right, and keeps getting better with each listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars "I wrestled with your brother! ", January 7, 2008
This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
There is something for everyone here - and you will most certainly play several tracks over and over. Humor and wit paired with insighful lyrics make this something that we can all share and enjoy. "I wrestled with your brother" is one of many of my favorite lyrics.

Enjoy and tell a friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, eclectic rock - worth getting!, January 6, 2008
This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
Warning! Catchy songs here! You'll definitely find yourself humming a few of these numbers. These two singer-songwriter guys on guitar (along with a stellar backup band) demonstrate their proficiency in a wide range of fun styles with both somber and humorous lyrics -- a la Barenaked Ladies or They Might Be Giants.

If, like me, you like unique songs that set a band apart from others, first check out Pharaoh and Six for a Parlay. Marlee and She's Mine will have you dancing, and Tuesday Evening & Kyle have a drive that pulls you in. Soon you'll be shouting "Happy Birthday," too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun new band!, January 6, 2008
This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
This album was a nice surprise. A selection of really eclectic tracks--some dark, some really funny (not unlike Barenaked Ladies or Phish). These guys have some serious vocal chops, and the harmonies are tight all throughout. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes pop, rock, accoustic, electric, folksy, or even theatrical music (Meatloaf, anyone?).

5.0 out of 5 stars Paint a Picture for your Mind, June 28, 2009
By
This review is from: Happy Birthday, Kyle (Audio CD)
Happy Birthday, Kyle is a great album full of stories. The lyrics are refreshing in this day and age of so many albums full of songs that, while catchy, don't always seem to make sense. The Local Tourists have strung together tales to enlighten your imagination by painting lyrical pictures that have you convinced that you know the characters by the end of the song. Great effort. Can't wait for the next set of stories.
