Happy Birthday shows Maisy on her special day, receiving cards (note: an envelope opens to reveal a small loose card), dressing for a party, playing games, and enjoying cake. Maisy at the Farm sets the mouse in motion as she rides a horse, drives a tractor, cleans the pigsty, and feeds baby lambs (the milk level in the bottle goes down with the pull of a tab). In both titles, simple illustrations done in primary colors with heavy black outlines add to the appeal. Good for storyhours.

Toddlers can gleefully participate in the festivities in this Maisy (Maisy Goes to Bed, 1990, etc.) adventure. Simple verse details the rituals surrounding a birthday; onlookers see Maisy receive cards in the mail, dress in her special outfit, play hide-and-seek, and, of course, enjoy a boisterous rendition of ``Happy Birthday.'' Incorporating the lyrics of the song into the text encourages children to sing the familiar tune while ``reading'' the story. Lucy Cousins is the creator of many wonderful picture books for children, including Yummy: My Favourite Nursery Stories and Hooray for Fish! , as well as her bestselling books about Maisy the mouse. About I'm the Best, she says, "I had the idea for this book after winning a tennis competition. I loved telling all my friends and family about it, but then I realized that I was probably showing off, like Dog!" My 2-year old daughter received this on her 2nd birthday and loved the simple, bright pictures and the moving features. We've read it to her at least twice a day for 3 weeks now. Not much text. the Happy Birthday song in big letters really gets her going.

Cousins "has it down" when it comes to the perfect books for children ages 0-4. Simple stories, two-dimensional drawings and bright primary colors. The subtle "lessons" that she passes on are a refreshing break from the sledgehammer approach to teaching taken by Barney, etc. No wonder Maisy is so popular!

We all love this one. It's our favorite of all the Maisy books we've read so far. Unlike many others that just have flaps this one does so much more. My daughter loves to blow out the birthday candles, (while I pull the tab), and slurp the juice, (while I again make it disappear.) I think my husband was won over by the happy birthday underwear under the party dress. All and all, a lot of fun and the mini version does the same as the bigger one for such a low price.
