5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Amy Hodgepodge series, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Happy Birthday to Me #2 (Amy Hodgepodge) (Paperback)
My daughter loves the Amy Hodgepodge series. Amy has a multi-racial background, which can be very hard to find in a young reader series.

Great for mixed kids. They really need to see others like them and read stories about them as well.

Amy is getting ready to invite her new friends to her very first birthday party sleepover. She comes up with an idea that will not only celebrate her birth but also her culture. Amy plans to share a Japanese tea ceremony and dress in her traditional Kimono. Amy is very excited and so are her friends. But when she takes a phone call the message for her father leaves her with the impression that her family may be moving to California. And on top of that her friends got last minute tickets to see their favorite singer on the same night as her party. Amy finds she has a lot to worry about and isn't quite sure how to handle all of the disappointment.

Wayans and Knotts have once again introduced culture into this wonderful story of friendship and diversity. Teaching young readers about friendship and the sharing of each others heritage is woven throughout this story. It's an excellent source for teachers and parents.

Again, my daughter loved it and of course I'm right there experiencing Amy Hodgepodge along with her. And again, my girl learned something from the book. She learned to talk about her feelings, not hold them in and about a different culture, Japan. What cool little gifts we get inside each Hodgepodge book! My pre-orders are in and we are anxiously awaiting the other releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative and smart, July 8, 2008
This review is from: Happy Birthday to Me #2 (Amy Hodgepodge) (Paperback)
I agree with the others that this was even better than the first - definitely my favorite. It is smartly written with a surprise ending that kept me guessing until the end. :-) I also like how Amy's culture and ethnic background are woven into the story in creative ways (i.e. birthday party invitations!). While the book is primarily entertaining, there is also an educational component to it as well. Can't wait for the next books to come out!

Believe it or not, I actually liked this one better than the first book, perhaps because the first one had to introduce all the characters. I was amazed that the book was able to hold my attention, as well as my six year old's and wondered how the authors would come up with a solution to the problem,I won't give away the ending!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amy HodgePodge Happy Birthday To Me, June 29, 2008
This review is from: Happy Birthday to Me #2 (Amy Hodgepodge) (Paperback)
My grandaughter, who is seven, absolutely loves the Amy HodgePodge books. Amy is a delightful character, a girl who is easy to relate to and love. This particular book has a lot of surprises like what happens when you plan a birthday party with good friends and everything goes not as expected. Just like the first Amy HodgePodge book, the ending is great and a little unusual. Amy and her friends are good kids who have lots of fun together and come up with good solutions for kids' everyday problems and adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner in the Amy Hodgepodge series, June 26, 2008
This review is from: Happy Birthday to Me #2 (Amy Hodgepodge) (Paperback)
This follow-up to "All Mixed Up" is just as good if not better. My daughter and her little friends really enjoy having me read this book. If you are looking for a book you can read to your child and not be bored, this is a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, January 23, 2010

I thought this book was extremely touching. The book really does see things through the eyes of a child. This makes it easier for kids to ask questions about serious subjects and consider the possible repercussions of their actions.

I purchased the entire set for my niece and she absolutely loved them. I gave them to her one by one and she has read them and shared them with her classmates and several parents have inquired as to where they came from and how they could get a set. I found both boys and girls find them interesting.
