More About the Author

"A person's a person, no matter how small," Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted."

Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped millions of kids learn to read.

Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1925, he went to Oxford University, intending to acquire a doctorate in literature. At Oxford, Geisel met Helen Palmer, whom he wed in 1927. Upon his return to America later that year, Geisel published cartoons and humorous articles for Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at that time. His cartoons also appeared in major magazines such as Life, Vanity Fair, and Liberty. Geisel gained national exposure when he won an advertising contract for an insecticide called Flit. He coined the phrase, "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" which became a popular expression.

Geisel published his first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937, after 27 publishers rejected it.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, an Academy Award, three Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, and three Caldecott Honors, Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books. While Theodor Geisel died on September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss lives on, inspiring generations of children of all ages to explore the joys of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cute, but very small April 9, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this as a sign in book for our son's first birthday party...but it's so small (probably 6x6 inches or so) that there's no way I'll use it that way. That's obviously my fault for not checking the dimensions...not the book's fault, but it was a disappointment nonetheless.

There are ten "pages", including the front and back cover. (This is a short book!) The first page has the cute birthday bird with a furry spot cut out on his shirt. Second page has a lift up flap, Third to fourth page has a moveable component...which is hard to move initially, and after you've read the book many times, it moves much more freely. Fifth page has a "sniff" component and shiny metallic "leaves". The sixth page/seventh page has a scrolling feature. Eighth page has again a moveable feature, pull tab style. Last two pages are cute and without any of the shenanigans the other pages feature..which is a little bit of a letdown.

It is a very cute birthday baby book though, and has a nice hard cover, good sturdy pages and spine. Has been enjoyed but I will likely put it away so it can be a 'memory item' for him for later on in life. Vivid fun illustrations and overall a fun, nice book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Seuss June 2, 2009
By CMA
Format:Hardcover
This book is not as good as most Dr. Seuss books I've read. My niece loves him because of the rhyming style, but this one isn't really that way. Some of the pieces of the book that have movement are kind of cute.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Movable Parts September 28, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Because I ordered this book online, I didn't see that there are movable parts--very cute but totally inappropriate for a one-year-old who will tear them off immediately. I specifically ordered the book because it is a board book and expected it to be sturdy and a nice birthday keepsake. It just hurts me to think how it will be mutilated.

I bought this book for my best friend's son's 1st birthday party, which was a Dr. Seuss themed party. She loved it for him and I hope he will love it when he learns to read as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gift May 21, 2013

I bought this book as a gift for a one year birthday. Her mom was impressed. Can't complain although I didn't get to read it myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars fell apart:( May 20, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The tabs didn't slide well and the pieces came off within a day or two. Wish I could return it but I used this for my son's birthday card so we'll be keeping it just for memories. Not worth it otherwise.

When my grdaughter was a baby and then some, she really enjoyed the Vtech Winnie the Pooh book. Even a child a few months old will learn to move the tabs to hear what Pooh is saying. Plus, since it is not made of paper, it is almost indestructible. They sell it on Amazon, at Walmart, etc. It... Read more
