5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh, wince, repeat

Bob Powers has the amazing ability to to make each of these often painful vignettes brilliantly funny. If you like a little ground glass in your humor to help it go down easier (and who doesn't?), there is no better place to go than "Happy Cruelty Day."

Powers' website is great, but somehow these come across even more vividly on paper. [And remember -...

3.0 out of 5 stars Works as a blog; does not work as a book
Anyone who loves Girls Are Pretty -- and who doesn't, really -- may be inclined to read a compilation of GAP posts in Happy Cruelty Day. I would vote against it. Or if you're going to read it, read it just like you'd read the blog -- a post, or maybe a couple, per day. Stylistically, it's not meant to be swallowed in big gulps. More importantly, I don't think there's...

[And remember - buy a book, save a... pixel. Or something.]

And you should buy two copies, because as soon as you start reading, I guarantee that you'll immediately think of that weird friend of yours who absolutely HAS to have this. It's that kind of book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My bathroom has never been filled with so much laughter!, January 4, 2007
By
This review is from: Happy Cruelty Day!: Daily Celebrations of Quiet Desperation (Paperback)
Historically, my trips to the bathroom are morose affairs filled with pain and struggle. However, thanks to 'Happy Cruelty Day', my desperate grunting is now frequently interrupted by hearty laughter. This book is as funny as it is dark and absurd, and with 365 entries, I'm guaranteed at least a week of terrifically funny reading if I read one entry per bathroom visit. Thank you for your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like nothing you've ever read, January 5, 2007
This review is from: Happy Cruelty Day!: Daily Celebrations of Quiet Desperation (Paperback)
It cannot be overstated how talented Bob Powers is, nor how completely screwed up his brain must be. His writing evokes a world of brutal sadness and fleeting beauty. That may not sound incredibly funny, but trust me it is. Buy this book and revel in the feeling that you're the only person in the world who "really gets it".

And probably like nothing I'll ever read again. This is a truly original and laugh-out-loud-even-when-you're-in-public-and-might-feel-embarrassed-by-your-laughter funny collection of humor.

I can definitely imagine this book polarizing readers. For people who are turned off by dark subject matter, this book will leave them paralyzed with shock. But for the rest of us, who appreciate humor mined from dark places (George Saunders, The Office, Mr. Show, Kids in the Hall, Donald Barthelme, David Sedaris), this book is practically a revelation. As you make your way through it and read entries like "Fourteen Ways to Tell A Cajun Chef to F*** Himself Day" you will be amazed at Powers' seemingly limitless imagination for his subject matter. Can't recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Read a Review of Happy Cruelty Day Day!, January 7, 2007
This review is from: Happy Cruelty Day!: Daily Celebrations of Quiet Desperation (Paperback)
Reading this provocative, meticulously-crafted book takes the same daring as watching a horror movie alone. You'll tell yourself it's just a book, but within a few pages, you'll be looking cautiously over your shoulder to see if your conscience has stepped out of your body and is taunting you from the chair by your bed. This kind of insight to the human condition doesn't usually arrive in such an hilarious package. Be enlightened, be very very enlightened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bob Powers brings the funny -- now in handy print form!, March 27, 2007
By
This review is from: Happy Cruelty Day!: Daily Celebrations of Quiet Desperation (Paperback)
I have always been a fan of Bob's writing on the Web, so I was thrilled when I heard he had a book coming out. It's the kind of book you keep in the bathroom or bedside or with you on the bus to give you a jolt of wicked entertainment each and every day. It's evil and genius and the kind of book that will be passed from cool friend to cool friend. Buy a copy and be that first cool friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sick, Twisted and Funny!, January 4, 2007
This review is from: Happy Cruelty Day!: Daily Celebrations of Quiet Desperation (Paperback)
I'm loving this book. It's hard to resist the urge to read more than one entry at a time, but if I only read one then the book will last all year. Of course I'll be a raving madman by the end of the year but at least I'll be one of those madmen who laughs all the time.... because this stuff is funny.

Every time I open it, I find something new. It makes me laugh and cry and feel less alone in the world. A perfect concoction of twisted humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare joy, an original and delightful voice in humorous prose..., January 4, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Happy Cruelty Day!: Daily Celebrations of Quiet Desperation (Paperback)
Being a long-time fan of Mr. Powers' work, I eagerly awaited the arrival of his latest book, and I was not at all disappointed.

Just as Van Gogh abserved the world around him and created vivid and surreal landscapes, familiarly of this plane and at the same time transcendently of another, so does Powers take in the world around him and translate it into a vision haunting and rare and funny.

One warning: this book is truly adult, and not in the sense that its entries are of a provocative and sexual nature (although many of them are). Rather, it's adult in the sense that its pages are filled with a mature sensibility, dark, and twisted and one borne of equal parts sorrow and joy.

Powers has created a work that will seem endless and vast until the last page, when it will seem as if it has concluded all too briefly.

I've ordered 5 copies of this book from Amazon at different times. The copy is always perfect, and the book is one of my favorites. I give it to friends with a great sense of humor. A never ending riot.
