5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Yet Lacking
After I saw the movie "Happy Endings," I knew one thing for sure: as soon as it was out, I HAD to get the soundtrack. I waited a few weeks for the release and finally bought it the day it came out. The soundtrack doesn't do the movie justic. Maggie G is of course amazing, and her tracks are the bones of the CD. I was hoping for a sequence that reflected the movie's temperment, but what i find instead is a collection of otherwise decent songs, almost haphazardly paired.

After I saw the movie "Happy Endings," I knew one thing for sure: as soon as it was out, I HAD to get the soundtrack. I waited a few weeks for the release and finally bought it the day it came out. While I was listening to it for the first time, I thought the music was great (especially the songs done by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who puts all those "singers" like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan to shame, in my own opinion) and the Calexico song Glimplse, but I also found it disappointing.

The CD has only eight songs (three by Maggie - How Lucky Am I?, I Can't Wait, and her touching rendition of Billy Joel's Just the Way You Are), three by Calexico) and songs by Black Heart Procession and Greyboy. There were some really great tracks in the film that are suspiciously absent from the soundtrack, including Maggie's renditions of Honesty and You Are The Same, Youpi by Kid Loco Featuring Cornu, a cover of Mas Que Nada by Astrud Gilberto, and, what is the most surprising ommision, Ashleigh Darkbloom's Last Night (Doesn't Matter To Me), which constantly plays on the movie's website with How Lucky Am I.

However, don't let the omissions stop you from purchasing a really good soundtrack to an excellent film.

And here's to hoping that a second Happy Endings CD is released with more of the music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really fantastic, May 2, 2006
This review is from: Happy Endings (Audio CD)
Maggie Gyllenhaal deserves to have her own solo album. She may not have the best voice around, but she infuses her lyric readings with a raw kinetic passion reminiscent of a young Patti Smith. Her rendition of "How Lucky Am I" is truly haunting. The album is a wonderful companion piece to the underrated film from which the music is culled.

A pretty GREAT CD... I really enjoyed this movie but so many great tracks are missing from the soundtrack. Perhaps best to get the DVD and see them that way...

4.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Maggie Gyllenhaal..., September 11, 2006
This review is from: Happy Endings (Audio CD)
Yes, 'Tropics of Love' is a pretty decent track but we can all admit that the real draw to this very short soundtrack is the inclusion of three songs sung by Maggie Gyllenhaal, two originals as well as her haunting rendition of Billy Joel's 'Just the Way you Are'. My personal favorite is 'I Can't Wait' but 'How Lucky am I' is also a great track. I still can't believe that the acadamy didn't swallow up these tracks for their 'Best Original SOng' catagory last year. My only regret is that this CD is so short. With only eight tracks it leaves you a bit wanting...like I don't know, maybe another Maggie song!

5.0 out of 5 stars Maggie Gyllenhaal needs her own CD NOW, March 16, 2006

I love this CD! All of the songs are good but it is a short tracklist. My favorite song on here is "How Lucky Am I" because Maggie's voice is just so raw. The song has an upbeat 50s vibe with a modern twist. I have a habit of only listening to her songs on the CD and unfortunately there are only 3. I really hope that she continues to sing and will hopefully record an entire album of her. She's very unique especially in comparison to say your typical popstars that are hard to tell apart.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good except for Gyllenhaal's, June 22, 2010
This review is from: Happy Endings (Audio CD)
I'm sorry, but Maggie Gyllenhaal's singing is just not doing it for me. She comes across as as tinny, not able to fill the acoustic space. The rest of the music is pretty fun and quirky.

Never thought of Maggie Gyllenhaal as a singer, but after seeing the movie i had to get the soundtrack. It's a wonderful cover of 'just the way you are' as well as a great song in 'how lucky am i'. She a great actor, but could easily fall back as a jazz singer in so far as i'm concerned.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, December 7, 2007
This review is from: Happy Endings (Audio CD)
I really loved this movie and a big reason was the music. I was going to buy this cd but then noticed my favorite song wasn't included so I didnt. "You are the Same" was the best and I cant find it anywhere.
