If, like me, you are an Adele Parks fan and love pretty much everything she churns out, 'Happy Families' will be a sore disappointment. For some strange reason Parks completely veers off from her usual eloquent and bubbly prose and instead has produced a novel that is simplistic in style and not particularly interesting plot wise. The tale of a middle-aged surburban single mum fails to take off and plods along, and her characters fail to draw empathy or come across as anything but one dimensional. I usually enjoy Adele Parks' novels immensely and have no idea why she has decided to stray from her usual winning formula, but I hope her next novel will revert back to her usual gripping style.
