Not only does he receive home-made gifts from his children and his wife, but he also finds that they have done some of his dreaded chores. Children will enjoy the rhythm of the text. The child that has accomplished a chore leaps out with ``Surprise!'' and presents his father with a gift that supports his Green Sox baseball passion. Then he is led on to another child's surprise. Hafner's colorful line and wash illustrations are filled with active people, pets, and homey details. Before the text begins, gift and breakfast fixings are underway. While some pictures are neatly framed, others spill sweaters, tails, and trees over the edges. This next-door family is sure to squabble sometimes, but on Father's Day their affection and appreciation are celebrated in text and picture. A welcome story in a virtually non-existent subject area. Dad wakes up on Father's Day to find surprises hidden all over the house by his family, Lenny, Linda, Laurie, Louise, Larry, baby Lester, and Mom. Each one has done something special such as fixing breakfast or doing chores, but as Dad discovers each new surprise, one of the kids (or mom) presents him with a gift pertaining to his favorite baseball team, the Green Sox. Finally, in the newly washed car, Mom drives the whole family to attend a Green Sox game, where they enjoy a pizza together.

This heartwarming, family-friendly story, written at a 2.5 reading level, fills a need for Father's Day books for elementary school readers. Unfortunately, at the time of this review it is out-of-print.
