I don't think your lungs can handle this kind of laughter...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Happy Gilmore (DVD)
You're looking for a comedy on DVD. Let's see...You don't want any comedy that's too sophisticated, like "Deconstructing Harry". You don't want any comedy that's too insane, like "There's Something About Mary". You JUST want to laugh. I'm proud to say "Happy Gilmore" will make you scream with laughter, my friend. This is Adam Sandler's platinum hit, the best comedy of his career. It has the coveted Amazon.com five-star customer rating, a rare find indeed for the comedy lover, and reviewers call it "the best golf comedy since 'Caddyshack'". The movie stars Adam Sandler (Bulletproof, The Wedding Singer, Billy Madison) as Happy Gilmore, a short-fused hockey player who just realized he AGAIN didn't make the cut for his hockey team for the 10th time in a row. After taking out his raging anger on the coach, he life begins to spiral downwards when his girlfriend leaves him, and he realizes his grandmother's prized house built by his grandfather's bare hands if about to be seized by the IRS in 90 days due to her failure to pay taxes in over a decade. But when he discovers his monster hockey slapshot equals one hell of a talent in golf, he is talked into playing golf by a local retired golfer, Chubbs Peterson, for the money to reclaim his grandma's house. But not only is Happy not ready for golf, but the president of the Pro Tour, Doug Thompson, doesn't think golf is ready for Happy! Even his future golf enemy, Shooter McGavin, thinks he's making a mockery of golf with his very bad temper and his rambunctious behavior. But Happy is a hit with fans, so he's weaved himself through the loophole...for now. For a shining moment he's riding on Cloud 9-iron, but Shooter McGavin, and the accidental death of his beloved mentor Chubbs, are threatening to take away not only his grandmother's house, but his dream as well, and it's not just about his grandma's house anymore...it's about triumph. So, if you love simple comedy, get Happy Gilmore on DVD. You'll fall down laughing....guaranteed!

The only guy to take off his skate and try to stab someone!,
By Sara (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Happy Gilmore (DVD)
This movie has got to be one of Adam Sandler's best. Notice how he always plays people with somewhat short fuses, though some not as violent as Happy Gilmore. But that's what makes this so funny. With an opening sequence in which he tries out for a hockey team for the tenth time and isn't accepted, and ends up beating up the coach, you know where this thing is headed. This movie is more than just a regular guy with an awesome shot due to hockey and an awful temper. But the movie is at it's best when Happy gets into a fight with 'The Price is Right' host Bob Barker and Bob wins! Anyone who hasn't seen this scene can't call themself an Adam Sandler fan! The basic story of this is pretty simple, it's about a guy who thinks he was born to play hockey, but still hasn't made a team. Then he meets a guy with a wooden hand who used to be a golf player, who tells him he should start. So he does, and he's got an awesome drive, but his putting stinks. And he has an arch enemy, a total a**hole named Shooter McGavin, who makes a total fool of himself many times but still thinks himself a pretty cool guy. This movie has got some pretty funny jokes and they're actually funny ( although somewhat juvenile, but what do you expect with Adam Sandler), and you can't help but love the hapless Happy. Overall you'll be pretty happy with a movie like 'Happy Gilmore'

Adam Sandler does it again!,
By Eric J. Hughes (Lancaster, PA (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Happy Gilmore [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Adam Sandler does it again with "Happy Gimore." By far his best movie, Adam plays a wanna be hockey player with a short-fuse. He gets in many fights in this movie, one with Bob Barker I might add.The story starts out with the audience finding out that he has tried out for this Minnesota hockey team too many times and has never been accepted. He has had enough of this happening to him so he tries to stab someone with his skate. He leaves the ice and later on a used to be golfer with a wooden hand noticed his ability and soon enough he is on the PGA tour. The only catch is, he doesn't want to be someone that wears tight clothing and volleyball hats while playing golf....he wants fans cheering, beach-balls being hit, and fans calling his name. A rival golfer hates this and tries to get rid of him and that is where the story takes off. Sandler plays a great role and is very funny of course. Now, I don't know about you, but if you say you like comedy but haven't seen this one yet, you are definitely not a comedy fan. Happy Gilmore has no faults and is laughter the whole way through. So if you feel like watching a movie with your buddies that you know you are gonna die laughing at, I would suggest buying this movie because you WILL watch it again and again. Thanks for reading my review and be sure to get this movie!!

Some Things That All Golfers Wish They Could Do....Sort Of!,
By
This review is from: Happy Gilmore (DVD)
A "pro" golfer duking it out with veteran game-show host Bob Barker right in the middle of a tournament. That scene alone makes this one of the more memorable comedies of the last 30 years. Almost everyone I know has either seen or heard of that scene and everyone laughs at it.
It IS ludicrous and that's what makes it so funny. In fact, most of the movie is totally preposterous, totally unbelievable and totally wacky, which is Adam Sandler's trademark in these comedies. He's low key but violent, as he was in Mr. Deeds, Punch-Drunk Love and a few other films. Here, Sander is even more vocal and violent than normal and definitely more crude, which is saying something since this actor usually doesn't play guys with a lot of class. "Happy" is a hot-tempered hockey player who can hit a golf ball 400 yards so he tries his hand on the PGA tour to help raise money for his grandmother. I just shake my head even writing that last sentence, it sounds so stupid....but this is a stupid movie with an incredibly stupid story but is hilarious, for the most part. Anyone who is a golfer would appreciate this movie more than others, because Sandler says and does things we'd all like to do on the links at times but, thankfully, don't. In short: this is a crude but very funny movie.

One of the funniest movies,

I hate to admit it but I've watched this movie more than 20 times and still laugh at it. I know, I know... It's juvenile, stupid, obnoxious and annoying. It is, however, funny, well-written and stands up to repeated watching. And there aren't very many movies I can say that about.
I recommend this highly and my whole family enjoys it. We wore out our VHS and then bought the DVD for Christmas this year.

Made me laugh out loud - the whole movie,
This review is from: Happy Gilmore [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This film was my introduction to Adam Sandler, and apparently it is one of his best works to date. If you can put aside your intellectualism for a while and just enjoy the outrageous schtick and sight-gags for what they are, you won't be disappointed. The story is about a guy who justs knows he was born to be a professional hockey player but ends up on the pro golf tour. All the usual gimmicks - and they work great. Tons of laughs here. If laughter is medicine for the soul, this movie is probably a cure for cancer.

Its Shooter's time!,

Happy Gilmore is one of the funniest movies ever made! This is Adam Sandler at this best; forget about 'The Water Boy' or 'The Wedding Singer' (Even although they are great movies) this is the best. Sandler plays a hockey player who becomes a golf player with comic results. Shooter McGavin (played by Christopher McDonald) is incredibly funny and adds to the great comic element of this movie. If you like comedies you MUST buy this DVD, its incredible. I've watched this film about twenty times now, and it still makes me laugh, a true classic from Sandler and company.

All-time Great Comedy,
By A Customer
This review is from: Happy Gilmore [VHS] (VHS Tape)
First of all, I am not an idiot. I appreciate great movies (my favorite is "How Green Was My Valley"), but this movie is simply terrific. While the cinematography leaves something to be desired, Mr. Sandler's jokes come fast and come funny. He has a more highly developed comedic form than most people give him credit for, and I cannot think of one joke in this film that misses. There is also a distinct pleasure one gets from watching the scorned Sandler beat up his hockey coach, screaming "That wasn't very nice!" - or observing Sandler take on an incensed Bob Barker. The other appeal of this movie is Sandler's underdog status; he is totally ignorant of the formalities of pro golf. He refuses to practice; he chooses a homeless man as his caddy; he calls for noise when teeing off; and he keeps his giant-sized winner's checks in the back seat of the car. As well, there are a few other good characters. Shooter, the best golfer on the tour, is the sleazy villian. Chubs, possibly the film's funniest character, is Sandler's teacher who admonishes him "Happy, stop acting like a damn fool." And of course, there is Sandler's former boss, an enormous man with a nail stuck in his head. What Sandler has shrewdly created here is one of comedy's most endearing and humorous characters. Unfortunately, critics, who would not laugh at anything unless in cynicism, shrugged it off as a mere frivolity. But, as the American people already know, Happy Gilmore is one of the funniest movies ever made.

Happy Gilmore looks great in HD. It definitely has vivid colors that pop off the screen. Some high def movies have similar video quality to the DVD version, but this isn't one of them. I highly recommend getting this.

Happy Gilmore,
By Scott (Windsor, Ontario) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Happy Gilmore [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The movie Happy Gilmore is the funniest laugh-out loud golf comedy since Caddy Shack. From the very first scene to the last, Adam Sandler and his cast will keep you in stiches and gasping for a breath. Unlike other of his comedies, Adama Sandler is not the only one delivering the laughs. A cast, who isn't that famous yet, but hilarious and meant for each role that they play accompany Sandler. The movie follows the entertaining career change of Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) who goes from being a brutal hockey player to a golf sensation. After finding out that his grandma has lost her house as the result of not paying her taxes, Happy vows to get the house back. After being cut from the local hockey team, Happy is discovered by an old golf pro, Chubs Peterson. He tells Happy that he has the potential to make a large sum of money playing golf. A light bulb goes off in Gilmore's head and he decides to put his hockey career on hold for a while to pursue this idea of becoming a golfer and thereby raising the money to get his grandma's house back. After winning a local tournament Gilmore makes the pro tour and is ready to start making money. His journey through the tour takes many comedic ups and downs as he battles with the villian of the movie, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald). Shooter will do anything to prevent Happy Gilmore from succeeding. This movie is a classic and undoubtedly one of the best comedies of all time. There is not a dull moment in the movie and anybody who dosen't laugh at Gilmore's antics on the course must surely have no sense of humour. There is no stop to the endless number of sidesplitting actors in this movie. Even when Adam Sandler is not in the scene, Christopher McDonald amuses you with his arrogant yet comical style and the cameo by Bob Barker is icing on the cake. I give the movie five out of five stars and recommend it for anyone who likes to laugh.
