Extremely Cute, September 2, 2010
This review is from: Happy Hamster (Paperback)
From the food-prep point of view the book is excellent, with complete lists of materials and tools, and clear large color photos illustrating every single step including "Admire your work" and "Clean up the mess". (I would enjoy a human-food cookbook that was like this.) There are only about 19 recipies which isn't a whole lot.
I myself don't have a hamster to cook for. I bought the book for the ideas behind the clever hamster-friendly foods and for the pictures of the hamsters chowing down on the same. The enjoyment that Mom and I have gotten has been worth the purchase price IMO.

Paw foods!, November 19, 2010
This review is from: Happy Hamster (Paperback)
If you've ever been lucky enough to have a hamster, you know these little fuzzballs do not just eat seeds -- I know hamster books tell you to feed them only seeds, but their REAL loves are fruits, veggies and carbs. So if you love pampering your little fuzzbutt, the "Happy Hamster" cookbook is a fun way to do it.
The recipes are by Mathijs van der Paauw (is there a better name for a pet owner?), who runs a moderately famous blog dedicated to the exploits of his hamster (or rather, sequential hamsters) Lucy. They include stuff like hamster spaghetti, hamster-sized vegetarian pizzas, apple sushi, little desserts, caesar salads, lasagna, microburgers, chicken soup, and even a special hamster Thanksgiving dinner.
And since hamsters are gourmands by nature, van der Paauw has fairly simple recipes for creating teeny-tiny meals -- for instance, he makes hamster tacos by carefully tracing out circles from a tortilla. Oh, and he uses fairly simple household tools to do so, such as the aforementioned tortillas being traced around a wineglass.
Additionally, van der Paauw gives detailed accounts of how to make the little foodstuffs. Each one is accompanied by a bunch of photographs of their preparation, so even little kids can make... well, some of them. Many include veggie-chopping, and he emphasizes the need to make sure the ingredients are hamster-safe.
And will these make the hamster happy? Well, each recipe is accompanied by a picture of the hamster viewing the finished product, usually with bright covetous eyes.
"Happy Hamster's" biggest recommendation comes from the cover picture. I mean, look at that face! This delightful, adorable little cookbook is a great way to add a little bliss to your hamster's life.
